Gosh. I’d never considered that Broom (Ulex europaeus) could grow as an epiphyte.

But here it is growing high up on tree ferns at Gillespie Beach in New Zealand.

Definitely one for #wildflowerhour

This photo of #MountCook and Mt Tasman was taken from our bed at 7:30pm this evening. Two hours later we were out hunting for #glowworms along a forest trail.

Only in #NewZealand!

Sometimes it’s the little things you encounter that impress you the most.

Well, today in Wanaka started out fine and bright, with afternoon rain forecast.
It certainly delivered!
Wintry conditions on Isthmus Peak summit, with no view at all after 3.5 hrs and 1,200m of uphill slog, initially in sunshine. So here’s a screenshot from the OS Maps app to prove I was there!

Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet in New Zealand, it’s not unreasonably regarded as a threat to native habitats.
Everything had a place until humans interfered.

I’m still finding it hard to accept the signs of spring in November.

Chinese village, Arrowtown, New Zealand.

Goodnight from Lake Te Anau, NZ.

Quite a lot of New Zealand seems to be closed this year!

Drove 15km down a gravel road to Waituna Wetlands, only to find yet another closure.

Thus far:
Hooker Valley Trail
Benmore Dam road. (temp)
Dunedin’s Tunnel Walkway
Cathedral Caves
Parakaunui Falls Walk
Tongariro Crossing (temp)

Well, we’ve got as far south as we can go on the #NewZealand mainland.
Now heading north and west, back into the mountains.

Concerned to hear about the serious fire around Tongariro that’s been burning since Saturday on North Island.

Just seen our second Yellow Eyed Penguin of the trip.
Had to do some digital-binocularing to get this.
Curio Bay, Catlins.

Delightful to wake up to this view from the bed in our accommodation at Kaka Point this morning (despite the rain).
What lovely hosts Mike and Jenny are! Best spot so far in our trip.

Now that’s the style of interpretative labelling we need to see more of! 🤣🤣🤣

I have questions.

THEY SURE ARE, ROBIN!

Mouraki Boulders, New Zealand.

Puts all the ones to shame that I’ve ever encountered in museums. Fantastic when they split apart, too.

GREAT SEPTARIAN NODULES, BATMAN!!!!🦸‍♂️

Some great views of Mt Cook/Aoraki today.
Glorious weather, too!

Who doesn’t admire a nice fern, or a pretty view through some vegetation?

Well, that was rather a cracking first day.
Picked up a brand new Mazda 3 automatic with just 25km on the clock, then an hour or so later found ourselves in the wilds of New Zealand.
