Patrick O'Brian was apparently a bit of a dick: deserting his former family etc etc. But Aubrey-Maturin novels still float my boat. So to speak.

It sounds like (to this untrained person) many of the British colonies in the 19th/20th centuries: import Indians to run the civil service.

I loved Sleeper so much. They showed it on BBC2 in the 80s in a Woody Allen season, and it was an eye-opener: Lots of material to go over with my geeky teenage friends at school the following day.

And in the middle of Ski Sunday, when they were showing the scores or whatever, they would play a section of "The Things that Dreams are Made Of" by the Human League. It took me years to find out what that music way.
