We all think plastic pollution is a problem, and it is. In the nearly 70 years between 1950 and 2019, the world produced a total of ~9.5 billion tonnes of plastic.

But all the plastic we have EVER produced weighs as much as CO₂ we emitted into the atmosphere during the first three months of 2024!

Media that equates chaos with death/evilness and order with life/goodness is soooooo funny like life is LITERALLY a precariously sustained disequilibrium and cold quiet entropy is the meaningless void it pulls against

How is that a publication like Rolling Stone gets it right when so many other news orgs are failing at real journalism & keeping it real—and so damn obvious about it?

Data on stillbirths in the US is frequently incomplete, delayed and is sometimes inaccurate, particularly when it comes to cause of death. Data on stillbirth risk factors and race also is deficient.

And it’s getting worse.

Fetal death records are often missing cause of death, race and other crucial information. ProPublica found that the problem is only getting worse.

Did you know only 5% of Americans’ plastic finds new life?

Most plastic items are too small for recyclers to bother sorting and processing, or they're assembled in such a way that it's less expensive to just make new plastic.

When Is “Recyclable” Not Really Recyclable? When the Plastics Industry Gets to Define What the Word Means.
Companies whose futures depend on plastic production are trying to persuade the federal government to allow them to put the label “recyclable” on plastic shopping bags and other items virtually…

Some politicians and pundits are pushing the idea that immigrants are more likely to commit crimes. Not only is that claim false, the opposite is true.

not saying anything groundbreaking here, but I really think "politics as a form of content to be served up and consumed like all other forms of content" has been an enormous, underrated disaster in terms of giving folks the illusion of being informed while essentially being gamed like a drug addict

Call me crazy, but I think Justin Sun, a Chinese national being prosecuted for fraud by the SEC, sending Trump $18 million should be a bigger story

The direct enrichment of Trump by a foreign national weeks before he takes office has merited no coverage in the NYT or Washington Post

I'll never get over this.

There's a sliding scandal-scale w/DJT at one end in a no-scandal-zone

Scandalous behavior needs to be reported, even if expected. It may not feel like news when DJT violates norms or laws; it's certainly not "new"

But it's vitally imp't news by any definition of the word
the frenzy over the hunter biden pardon is a good reminder that the press knows how to make something a scandal and has decided that nothing trump does is truly deserving of that treatment
