He was a big, well-fed boy. I tried (unsuccessfully) to find him in the same area on my last visit to Raton.

Quarai is 1 of 3 pueblos in the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument (near Mountainair). All were abandoned before the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, due to a combination of disease, drought, famine & raids. The Tompiro people joined Isleta Pueblo or joined their Piro linguistic brethren further south.

The Tompiro inhabited Abo Pueblo. They were important traders, exchanging valuable salt from the Salinas region for bison products and other goods with Great Plains tribes, and acted as intermediaries between the Plains and Rio Grande Valley peoples.

Prospectors discovered #gold nuggets in Bear Creek in May, 1860, setting up as #mining camp originally known as "Birchville." As news of the gold spread, the population grew from a camp into a town, until the Apache scattered everyone. It was resettled as Pinos Altos in 1864.

The situation escalated when the cowboys squared off against Baca for 33 hours, firing over 4,000 rounds into the small adobe building where he had taken refuge. Baca survived. Though he was later charged with murder, he was acquitted and went on to become a lawyer, sheriff, and mayor.

Located in Reserve, #NewMexico, the statue of Elfego Baca commemorates the Frisco shootout on December 1, 1884. Baca went up against a mob of over 80 cowboys. The gunfight began when Baca, as a self-appointed deputy, arrested an intoxicated cowboy named Charlie McCarty.

Gold was discovered in White Oaks in 1879. It became the 2nd largest city in the territory by the 1880s, w/ a population of 4,000+. The town's fortunes declined when the gold mines waned and a planned railroad was never built. There are a few historic buildings and the No Scum Allowed Saloon.

A replica of a burial crown from the Silla dynasty. That dynasty ended with an out of touch aristocracy, egregious corruption, excessive taxation, peasant revolts, etc.

Well done #Shade 👏

#NoKingsAlbuquerque October 18.

LOTS of people showed up. Each person has reasons. Those reasons may differ, but we are in the same boat. United we stand. Divided we fall.

Personally, I appreciate the sense of community. 🙂
