All were abandoned before the Pueblo Revolt in 1680, due to a combination of disease, drought, famine & raids. The Tompiro people joined Isleta Pueblo or joined their Piro linguistic brethren further south.

The Tompiro inhabited Abo Pueblo. They were important traders, exchanging valuable salt from the Salinas region for bison products and other goods with Great Plains tribes, and acted as intermediaries between the Plains and Rio Grande Valley peoples.

Prospectors discovered #gold nuggets in Bear Creek in May, 1860, setting up as #mining camp originally known as "Birchville." As news of the gold spread, the population grew from a camp into a town, until the Apache scattered everyone. It was resettled as Pinos Altos in 1864.
