The Gila National Forest is a 3.3 million-acre national forest in SW #NewMexico. The national forest encompasses the world's first designated wilderness, the Gila Wilderness. The Gila Cliff Dwellings were built by the Mimbres branch of the Mogollon people between 1270-1300.

Alamogordo was founded in 1898 by the Eddy brothers, who brought the railroad to the area, envisioning the city as a rail junction. They named it "Alamogordo" (large cottonwood tree). Initially, it was a dry community, because the brother's first attempted settlement got out of hand...Carlsbad.

The Catwalk National Recreation Trail is built along the steep walls of Whitewater Canyon using metal walkways. The area is open from sunrise to sunset. Originally a route for a 19th-century pipeline to a local mining mill, the current catwalk was built in 1961, rebuilt in 2003 after flood damage.

Rio Costilla Park offers outdoor recreation like camping, fishing, and hiking. The area is also known for conservation efforts to restore native fish populations, particularly the Rio Grande cutthroat trout, and for recreational activities like fly fishing in its streams & lakes.

The Valley of Fires Recreation Area is adjacent to the Carrizozo Malpais, one of the youngest lava flows in the continental U.S. Approx. 5,000 years ago, volcanic vents at Little Black Peak erupted, and the resulting molten rock flowed southward for 44 miles, creating a vast field of basalt lava.

City of Rocks is a unique New Mexico state park known for its stunning, otherworldly volcanic rock formations, which resemble a city skyline, complete with "streets" and "buildings". It is located in the Chihuahuan Desert, roughly halfway between Silver City & Deming.

El Santuario de Chimayó is a historic Catholic shrine, famous for its "holy dirt," believed to have healing powers. Visitors can collect the dirt from a special pit, known as El Pocito. Built in 1813, it's a pilgrimage destination for thousands of people each year.

Abó is one of three communities preserved within the Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument. It was a thriving Tompiro pueblo, a trading center, with salt deposits east of the village. Disease, drought & raids decimated the villages after the Spanish arrived - newmexiconomad.com/san-gregorio...
