This little guy was in our backyard, hanging out after having breakfast. We believe it is a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk. It’s a humbling reminder that with all our human worries, hawks are still going to kill and eat smaller animals. Nature will go on, one way or another, long after we will.

How to Do Absolutely Nothing Rent a house near the beach, or a cabin but: Do not take your walking shoes. Don't take any clothes you'd wear anyplace anyone would see you. Don't take your rechargeables. Take Scrabble if you have to, but not a dictionary and no pencils for keeping score. Don't take a cookbook or anything to cook. I come into the peace of wild things who do not tax their lives with forethought of grief. I come into the presence of still water. And I feel above me the day-blind stars waiting with their light. For a time I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

We thought it would be better than this-more sensible, more neatly worked out, more righteous, according to our impeccable analysis of what righteousness should look lik And yet, here we are. No good pretending it isn't both a slog and a crisis, which is to say, wearing on every last nerve. And still, when you least expect it, you find yourself ambushed by Joy, who, tail whipping and ears slicked back to her head, launches herself into your lap, leaving you breathless and covered in kisses.
