Physician Anna Sarah Kugler was born 169 years ago today in Pennsylvania, but spent most of her life in Guntur, India, where she established a medical dispensary in 1893, and then a hospital in 1897, which she directed until her death in 1930.

Eunice Foote (1819-1888) was an American scientist, inventor, and women's rights activist. She attended the Troy Female Seminary, a progressive institution for women, and took science courses at the Rensselaer School, gaining a broad education in scientific theory. Although she received little recognition in her time, she was the first to demonstrate the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide. In 1856, she conducted experiments showing that CO2 traps heat more effectively than other gases, suggesting its role in climate change-three years before John Tyndall's more widely credited research. Her findings were published in the American Journal of Science and Arts, but she was not invited to present them; instead, a male colleague, Professor Joseph Henry, delivered her work. In addition to her scientific contributions, Foote was active in the women's suffrage movement and attended the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. Though overlooked for much of history, she is now recognized as a pioneer in climate science.
