Grayson Perry made a great three-part documentary about the British class system for Channel Four called All In The Best Possible Taste. I don’t know if it’s available online. For me the most helpful thing he did was separate Middle Class into two categories, one (mine, alas) snobbier than the other

Broadly: UK working class make their living with their bodies, middle class make their living with their minds, upper class make their living with their assets.
But it isn’t just you, it’s also the people you’re from, your beliefs, attitudes, aspirations.
It’s not about income, at individual level.

Upper class is about family. Diarist Alan Clark sneered at someone who ‘bought their own furniture’. You can be upper class and have no money, and earn a shedload and not be upper class. Meanwhile a load of people in middle class jobs think they’re working class…

The best is Kate Fox’s book ‘Watching the English’. I think she introduces the gnome theory - lower class: ‘look at my garden gnome’. Upper class: ‘I have amassed a world leading collection of gnomes, let me tell you about them’. Middle class: ‘I have a gnome, ironically, isn’t it funny’

Tell city planners to legalize small lot apartments throughout Vancouver. Not in a few years when they might get around to looking at it, but now, as part of this process. Vancouver has only been falling further behind.

The problem from their point of view is that rapid decarbonization requires public, collective decisions about the organization of production, in a way that threaten capital-owners' authority over both the production process and the political system.

It's fun to imagine a kid flipping this script: "I'm going to live in this neighborhood for the next fifty years; I need my bike to get to school, the park, the library, and maybe even to work one day; and I want a whole lot of bike lanes."

It's not unusual to go to a public meeting about a traffic-calming project and hear someone say, "I've lived in this neighborhood for the past fifty years, I need my car to get to work, and I don't want any bike lanes."
