March 23rd: female fencer competes in mixed-gender event, beating several male competitors, finishing 8th

March 30th: same fencer films herself telling trans competitor “I am refusing to fence you, because I am a woman and you are a man,” collects $5000
The Fencingtracker.com page for Stephanie Turner, who competed in a mixed gender foil event on 3/23 and finished 8th of 32 competitors The video shows Turner taking her position on the fencing strip-blade ready, uniform on— only for her to toss her mask aside and take a knee. Sullivan approached her, thinking she might be injured, and asked if Turner was okay. "No," Turner recalls telling Sullivan. "I am refusing to fence you, because I am a woman and you are a man." The video of Turner and Sullivan went viral after it was posted to Twitter on April 2 by the Independent Council on Women's Sports (ICONS), a far-right organization which aligns itself with known hate groups such as the Alliance Defending Freedom. It is not immediately clear how ICONS first acquired the video, but it catapulted Turner into the national anti-trans media ecosystem. Less than a week after the post, the XX-XY Athletics Fund-the non-profit arm of an anti-trans clothing brand by the same name— dubbed Turner a "Courage Wins Champion," awarding her $5,000 and mentorship through a "leadership program."

Transphobes regularly argue trans women shouldn’t play sports if they’ve gone through male puberty because it provides too big an advantage, but this story shows even when a trans athlete ***didnt*** go through male puberty, they’ll be just as vicious and cruel and outraged

I can't remember the last time I saw an article just focus on this. Not that they've bent the truth or misrepresented a few facts a little, but that every single solitary thing that the GOP says on the topic is a stone cold lie with absolutely no basis in reality.

They’re lying about a “transgender cult” and “transgender insanity,” about teachers indoctrinating kids with “transgender ideology” and about “making mice transgender.” Right-wing activists, anti-trans bigots, many politicians, the president — they’re lying to you about many things but especially trans women and girls in sports. They’re lying about transgender athletes supposedly ruining women’s sports, and they’re lying about this being a ubiquitous “problem.” They are deliberately and strategically lying about trans folks’ lives, about trans athletes and about their own disingenuous motivations for pushing these lies. They don’t care because they keep doing it. Worse, it’s working. They're lying about trans people, especially trans women and girls in sports, probably, in part, because the actual data doesn't support their arguments. Yet several states have their own bans against trans athletes competing in sports consistent with their gender identity, despite expert estimates of fewer than 100 trans high school athletes nationwide. In 2022, Utah's Republican governor, Spencer Cox, vetoed an anti-transgender bill - it was eventually overruled by the legislature - and outlined his rationale. Along with the high suicide rates for trans youth, he noted that of 75,000 high school athletes in the state, four identified as trans and just one student was playing girls' sports. A whole state bill targeting four athletes, but really, one.

women's sports are thriving and growing in every possible way—participation, fandom, financial support, etc. the only actual existential threat to them I can think of is "Republicans saying we need to ban them after falsely claiming they are overrun by trans athletes"

Can we just take a moment to acknowledge how preposterous it is that a player on SJSU was outed as trans by a teammate and is now being bullied by half her opponents, lawmakers, JK fucking Rowling, the ICON TERFs et al, and yet we are supposed to accept that *she* is the one endangering *them*?!?

This is the furthest thing from heroic. TERFS like ICONS and JK Rowling are all-in on demeaning the athletic abilities of women in their relentless campaign to demonize trans people.
