I'm floored.

This is ONE stretch of ONE side of the street in deep red, small town Knoxville, TN today.

This is a city that Trump won in 2024 by 20+ points.

The scope of these protests are massive—American from both sides of the aisle are pissed.

There will be no kings.

I don't know why I thought of this video. Perhaps just missing the love of family. It's a bit lonely these days. So to my Bluesky family you've got All My Love

Contextualizing with limits on constitutional power is CRUCIAL.
Tomorrow, we expect Trump is going to sign an Executive Order claiming to dissolve the U.S. Department of Education.

Reminder: Trump does not have the legal authority to destroy a cabinet department; reporting on the EO as if he does have that power is both inaccurate and unethical.

Trump: Gutting National Parks—And Hiding the Evidence

National parks hit 331M visits, but Trump officials don’t want you to know. A leaked memo bans the Park Service from promoting the numbers—while firing rangers, closing visitor centers, and cutting safety.

This won’t go well—we love our parks.

I have work to do but I'm distracted by watching US scientific progress & leadership being irreversibly undermined because a few unelected malcontents are penalizing researchers for following legal requirements set out by congressional orders to augment basic research with benefits to society.

Destroying the world-class scientific research that we do in the US will not serve you well. Unless maybe you are an oligarch.
Add it all up, and it almost appears as if the NIH cuts, the censorship, the board takeovers, and the threats to endowments are all part of a systematic effort to destroy the university and college system as we know it today….

not paying indirect costs for research is like only paying the players in the Super Bowl.

can't have a Super Bowl without coaches, referees, security, janitors, announcers, stadium staff, and a stadium - and you can't have research without supporting people and facilities

Executive wants to frame the NIH indirects cut as $4B in savings.

But given that NIH returns $2.5 on every $1 investment, this would actually cost US economy a net $6 BILLION (per year!). Not to mention the human costs of wrecking education and research sectors and the communities they serve.
Direct Economic Contributions
NIH directly supports the economy through investments in research institutions and job formation.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.
