As expected, the Demon Slayer film was awesome. Despite the series' usual narrative and characterization flaws, this production seriously elevated the anime spectacle film to a new hight. Extremely thrilling and visually impressive I'm so glad I got to see this in cinemas

dusted off the ol' Netflix for a jdrama and decided to watch Michihito Fujii's Faceless (2024), a gripping suspense drama with some surprisingly great performances. I would have liked a little more depth from the screenplay but Fujii's ambitious directing more than made up for it!

They had an exhibition on historical korean animation. Lots of fun interactive experiences, a well designed spot

Visited the Korean Film Archive today and tried out a robot tour guide at the museum. Very strange experience but a great place. Loved the library.

Bobby ni Kubittake (1985) could be considered among Kadokawa novel film focused on youth and motorbikes. Like most OVAs the narrative is often very light in favor of stylized aesthetics through visuals and popular music. Fantastic montage sequences that play with color and live action footage.

Distance (2001) by Koreeda might be among some of the best cinematography I've seen. Perfect for cinema aesthetic accounts. The film itself is weighty, meandering, and highly static, owed to by the largely improvised performances and difficult subject matter.

In Between Seasons (2016)

A beautiful queer movie from Korea. There's such emotional depth to many of the shots that encompass the characters' feelings of conflicted longing. I really want to linger on with much of the visual imagery of this film

Antique (2008)

Effortlessly weaving in a whole season's worth of content in just 1:45, but not feeling rushed at all, this was somewhat of a breezy watch. A really nice depiction of homosexuality from this time that, while not super nuanced, is positive and not used as a reduction of personality.

Astro Boy (2003-2004)
Genuinely excellent TV! Theres something timeless about Astro Boy, especially in the way that he is caught between political strife between humans and non-humans, its really played well here and especially watching this now in the advent of generative AI

Shin Kamen Rider (2023)
Shame on me as a Kamen Rider fan for not watching this until now but it was worth the wait. What an awesome movie, I dare say one of my favourite Anno film on a technical level. A little too much gore and cgi animation though, but it all came together for quite the spectacle.

Mondays: See You 'This' Week! (2022)
A pretty serviceable time loop drama, thats way meaner to its characters than in Ueda's works as the characters are trapped in a never ending workweek. Keep an eye out for Wan Marui, she's been giving some stellar performances lately

First up Farewell to Spring (1959), my first Kinoshita film actually. Quite an interesting post-war drama thats quite subtle at times. The individual plots get a little annoying but they come together very well on the central theme of friendship. Some good performances and GREAT cinematography.

Finally the semester is over, now its time to keep a log of everything I watch and read over the summer.

I've been reading "Love in the Big City" and watching the tv series lately potentially for a seminar paper as I'm getting interested in queer media, especially film and television.

It really lives up to the hype, I'm genuinely enjoying both!

Just watched: Laapataa Ladies (2024)

Felt like a comfortable mainstream comedy film, but with a light feminist angle - I liked it quite a bit.

A great watch for something low stakes, feels good, and gives a gentle pushback on men.
