FWIW @carolinaforward.bsky.social mapped things out last year, and again with the caveat that per capita rates are not always a perfect mechanism for comparison, the homicide rate across many counties in Eastern North Carolina was higher than in urban counties. carolinaforward.org/blog/nc-crim...

He recorded that song like a month after the ship sank! The whole event was so fresh that he didn't know all of the details about it when he wrote the song, and later he changed some lyrics during his live shows to make them more accurate.
