In real life, the new team asked Carey to come to the inaugural Browns game against the Steelers in 1999. On the field that day, he fired up the fans who saw him as a son of the city. "I want to send a message. A message to anyone who ever made fun of Cleveland. A message to anyone who ever told a Cleveland joke, or laughed at a Cleveland joke," he screamed out, "You can now, officially, shut up." The Browns lost to the Steelers, 43-0. By then, though, Carey wasn't the fan that he once was, the kind that would cry after a bad loss or let a loss on Sunday put him in a bad mood on Monday. He got along just fine without the Browns. "I found out then that I didn't need football," he says. When he was growing up, the team seemed to be woven into the fabric of the city. After they left, football just felt like a money grab. That apathy started to turn to anger over the amount of public money being spent on the Browns. Carey joined the board of the Reason Foundation, and met with local politicians in Cleveland close to a decade ago to talk about some of the city's biggest problems. Schools were struggling. People were leaving. But the first thing that the city council members wanted to talk about, Carey says, was the Browns. Since then, the city chipped in millions for two new 192-foot-wide, 40-foot-tall video boards that Carey noticed were suspiciously shaped like Tennessee, the home state of owner Jimmy Haslam. "I was like, f--- the Browns, man," he says.

I suppose it's questionable whether the "North Carolina Rabbit Hole" is a reliable source, but the guy does seem to have done his research and interviewed the road's designer and suchlike, so interested on opinions on that? — Amakuru (talk) 19:11, 3 July 2024 (UTC) Great find! I really like this concept of two rest stops in the middle that can be accessed by (normal) right exits. The author seems to be slightly more "independent journalist" than "blogger" but it isn't completely obvious why he passes our RS guidelines. If we trust his statement that there are almost no sources on this but do not trust his statement about the rest area, we won't be able to continue. —Kusma (talk) 19:47, 3 July 2024 (UTC)

Zink got here Thursday night for the videofest. It got wild. "Saw some boobs," he says, but then sighs. "More balls than boobs." Afterward, he drank until he got tired, wandered into somebody's room, found a space on the floor, and found an extra towel in the bathroom to use as a pillow. He needs a nap. A few minutes later, a long-haired, red-bearded guy named James comes walking up and dumps a spent canopy on to the floor next to the fireplace. "I landed in a bush," he says. James just jumped off something. "Dude, there's all kinds of fuckin' thorns in there," James says to Zink, unfurling the lines and canopy. He jumped from a bridge, although he's not sure exactly where it was. "I have no idea," says James. "I'm a little inebriated." It was a 230-foot drop, he thinks, which would make it the lowest jump he's ever made. He's used to jumping off 1,000 foot tall television towers. He and some other guys have already made two jumps today. They got up at 6 a.m. He keeps giving details until he realizes an outsider may be in his midst. The story gets more vague. He decides not to give his last name.

That particular episode led the Winston-Salem Journal's opinion page to pine (in 1984) for a Republican plan to establish an independent redistricting commission in which state lawmakers could only say yes or no to the entire map without being able to amend it (spoiler: that never happened)
The most promising overhaul of the legislative redistricting mechanism was outlined by Republican Rep. James T. Broyhill of North Carolina's 10th District several years ago. Broyhill suggested that redistricting be taken out of the hands of the General Assembly as a whole and be turned over to an independent reapportionment commission such as the ones created by a number of other states. Broyhill's suggestion contained more than a little merit when he first made it back in 1978. In light of what happened in 1981 and 1982, the Broyhill approach is so meritorious that the General Assembly can't afford not to implement some version of it before the redistricting required by the 1990 census. Ideally the commission would be relatively small. Its exact composition would be something for the legislature to deter-mine. Broyhill suggested that members be chosen by the lieutenant governor, speaker of the House and the majority and minority leaders of both houses of the General Assembly. The commission would have all the powers involved in drawing maps. The General Assembly would have all the powers except one in dealing with the maps. Maps would have to be adopted or rejected - but not amended. One change in one district to suit one lawmaker and the entire state map can be adversely affected and therefore rendered useless.
