What I saw in S1 is how incredibly tired BOTH Ed and Izzy were. They just manifest their frustration and depression in different ways and Ed's is more palatable and understandable for people who haven't been there.

Izzy is really for grown folks. You have to have lived a life to appreciate those flavors. Thats why cool, mature ppl like Vico find Izzy fascinating while he provokes feelings in many babies similar to the fear I felt as a child over Hexxus, the evil spirit of destruction from Fern Gully
