I have to speak at our campus Trans Day of Remembrance event today and I thought I'd share what I'm going to say
I came out as trans in 2011. I've been going to Transgender Day of Remembrance vigils for a long time now, and one of the things I've learned over these years is that trans people have to cultivate a very particular relationship to grief. It's not optional. It's something you learn how to work through, because you have to. So much of entering into trans relationships is knowing death. We fight every moment of our lives, and for some of us the fight is infinitely more difficult. Some of us have parents who betray us; some of us have friends who never quite get it; race, class, ability, and political conflict all compound with such a particular weight that it's hard to comprehend. Woven into this is the threat of violence from inside and outside our bodies and the lack of responsibility that the world feels for sustaining the presence of trans bodies. We hold these truths in our hearts but also have to protect ourselves. It's too much to constantly consider. But far too often the unthinkable happens. Over the years I've watched TDoR evolve. There's been growth in how people putting on the events understand intersectionality. When we think about trans death on a global scale, we have to grapple with what it means to speak for others, to claim a global trans community. And that's complicated. Most of the names we will honor are people who died in contexts very different from ours. But I believe it's important to mark and grieve those we have lost, even those we don't know. Our fates as trans people are intertwined and influenced by each other, even if we experience life very differently and in very distinct ways. The death of one trans person impacts every trans person in the world. I want to talk about grief in this particular moment we're in. We're experiencing one global crisis after another, and it can seem endless - the amount of loss, the weight of it. It's easier not to acknowledge it, not to make space for it. To keep pushing forward and pushing down what makes us uncomfortable, what makes us sad. In American culture, there's no space made for grief and mourning unless you make it yourself, or make it alongside others who care for those you've lost. And trans people know this. We have to cope with the potential for loss constantly in a way that many people struggle to understand. Part of this is because our community is numerically small and dispersed. For many trans people, connection to trans community may only be people online, or one or two people in your neighborhood or town. We are lucky to have a larger trans community in our region, but it can still feel lonely. When we lose someone, we feel it across that whole fragile web. I've been thinking a lot about what kinds of emotions bring about political change. We live in a world where anger has been the motivating force for social movements, especially in the last ten years. And we see how easily anger gets co-opted, weaponized, turned against the very movements it started in. There's nothing wrong with being angry. But it's important to make space for grief and sadness and loss. Space to remember and mourn and care for each other, to help keep us here in the here and now. That's what we are doing today as we practice grief. It's making space we're not usually given. It's saying these names and holding the weight of these lives, even briefly, even when it hurts. That's the work. That's how we keep each other here.
