‘Give them enough rope to hang themselves’ is a phrase I first came to understand through Louis Theroux. I find something deeply disturbing and authoritarian in the implicit notion that there are certain topics where audiences cannot be trusted to simply observe and assess on their own terms.

Members of my family were tortured and killed in the Holocaust because countries like Britain said it wasn't their problem. Everyone said never again. And here we are. It's sickening beyond belief.

What worries me is not government use of AI per se but the slightly credulous way that the government talk about it, which makes me suspect they will be taken for rubes by the tech companies selling their services.
