To correct myself: he either said “saddest” or “most dispiriting,” both of which still work but aren’t nearly as funny in this context.

He didn’t! He went to war and published his first novel just after he got back. But he was part of the social and literary world of the day, so he knew basically everyone. (Example: he was friends with Christopher Isherwood. MYRA BRECKINRIDGE is dedicated to Isherwood).

A quick glance at the Parini bio suggests that Vidal disliked Oates because of a review she wrote of LINCOLN. Parini also says Vidal secretly read and enjoyed a book of her essays.
