Talk to me about community psychology, cognitive neuroscience, gay nonsense, RPGs and musicals

Hi Bluesky! I'm Nate, a PhD researcher (in trans youth mental health and community psychology), science communicator, non-fiction writer, editor, podcaster and cat fanatic.

I'll be talking brains, mental health, neurodiversity, LGBTQ+ lives, RPGs, and general yapping.
Revisiting my frankly phenomenal blog post from last year for @braintasticsci.bsky.social about the neuroscience of fear, and why we kind of like getting scared.

I'm back at #NewScientistLive next week, talking human memory, animal intelligence, and how slime moulds accidentally designed the Tokyo subway system at their schools day this Monday!

🚨 BREAKING | 1,339 people have now been arrested on "terrorism" charges in 2025, with almost all of them busted for holding signs at pro-Palestine protests.

This is more than any year on record, by far.

PROVOKE AND PUBLICISE

Tomorrow in the Houses of Parliament the transphobes will attempt a “Provoke & Publicise” action. Provoke and Publicise was originally developed as a tactic by racist segregationists in US states like Alabama & Oklahoma to try and stop the civil rights movement there…

Every bomb dropped, every child killed, bears the stain of British complicity.

This genocide is made possible by the UK, US, and EU — arming, funding and shielding Israel as it massacres with impunity.

How do those responsible sleep at night?

I also head that a lot of MPs were taken back by the strength of pro-trans support in the wake of the SC ruling, because all they ever heard from was GCs.

I mean, that's just not true, that's who they listened too. Still, it is working. Keep writing. Keep phoning

Are you trans, non-binary or gender nonconforming and aged 15-24?

I’m looking for participants for my PhD study into the social groups and hobbies that young trans people take part in. If you’re interested, click the link below!

I'm challenging myself to run 100 miles in March (I am bad at running).

In 2017, 92% of trans school pupils in the UK considered suicide.

In 2023, transphobic hate crime rose by 11%.

Young people deserve to live their lives.

I'm doing my first live science show of 2025 on Tuesday, performing Amazing Animals at Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity with Braintastic! Science.

It's also my first show since testosterone started giving me teenage boy voice cracks, so... look forward to that.

He boasts about being a sexual predator, he's been accused by 25 women of rape, harassment or assault, a jury found he "forcibly and non consensually penetrated Carroll's vagina with his fingers," he supports banning abortion.

But he hates trans people and so the Times calls him "a feminist hero."

Just did the maths: I did 22 science comms gigs in 2024 I performed in village halls, classrooms, assembly halls, theatres, the Excel centre and, at one point, a tent. Not bad for a side hustle!

Anyway, here's to 2025 and you hiring me to perform at your event.
