I wonder if it could be about the causes of crime. I’d imagine using a gun is a lot more efficient, but also requires some planning to get your hands on and upfront costs that necessitate financial gain. Knives you’re more likely to get caught, but if you have a mental break they’re right there

It’s interesting how shootings have declined while violent crime broadly went up. Was there some gun control implemented?

Ah, I moved for school right as COVID hit. I might be missing that context. Still, I even got punched on the subway one time as a kid. I think growing up in NYC, you recognize crime does happen, but it's not the end of the world and it's better here. I see a lot of transplants driving this convo

One thing to keep in mind for these discussions is that subways and cities are *significantly* safer than less dense areas at night. You're almost always around other people. A really substantial amount of these fears are borne out of racism. NYC's crime rate is lower than the national average.
