A candid shot of our panto choreographer in rehearsal today - the enigmatic, exacting, and inscrutable Autumn. Ooh she knows what she wants and she’ll drill us until we get it right! I’m exhausted!

A treat to see this brand new piece of work by @melhugsopera.bsky.social for the @teteateteopera.bsky.social Festival - it was funny, satirical, snappy, beautifully sung (of course) and passed the Bechdel Test with flying colours. Am excited to see what happens to it next! 😃👏👏👏

My latest research wheeze into Edwardian theatre history has turned up this terrifying beast and am not sure I want to carry on delving 🫣

Off to Torquay to perform at this variety show for Baton of Hope - with all money raised going directly to local suicide prevention initiatives.

Have always wondered what it was like in the Rivoli Ballroom… this is one of the bars and it’s so beautiful in the main spaces. Sunday morning tiredness evaporated as soon as I walked in. Cannot wait to host a show here as Ada next week! 😍🥰😍

Watching the news feels increasingly like a psychological versio of the first part of suffragist actress Eva Moore’s unexpectedly violent favourite beauty treatment… with unfortunately no soothing or invigorating after effects 😳

A fascinating trip to @holburnemuseumbath.bsky.social to talk about the Grand Tour and travel to Italy in the 19C with Museum Director Dr Chris Stephens and Professor Roey Sweet from the University of Leicester. The programme is a BBC Radio Proms Plus and will be broadcast in August - date tbc!

Security made me check my bag of conference pears (newly purchased as props for Ada’s show tomorrow) into the cloakroom for tonight’s Tim Minchin show at the Hammersmith Apollo. The lovely cloakroom attendant was as amused/bemused as I! 😄🍐⁉️

Suffrage bicycle fun!
Autumn 1907 - a group of women called the “Suffragette Scouts” meet regularly outside the Court Theatre in Sloane Square to take the message of suffrage out of the city by bicycle. Here’s three of them pictured setting off for Redhill in Surrey.

As a theatre historian it’s only fitting that this weekend, I (as Ada Campe) will perform in the style of Edwardian variety act Francini Olloms… not his acro-whilst-playing-the-concertina routine, but his profuse perspiring 🥵 He must have been SO sweaty for it to have been used in an ad in 1914!

Delighted to be asked back to host the #3MT competition at the University of Westminster as part of their Graduate School Festival. As ever, great to hear so much new research presented so succinctly.

Great to be part of the New Gen Thinkers workshop day again - my sixth year chairing the afternoon debate session! All the candidates were, as ever, so engaging across a range of topics. Pleased that the AHRC and BBC Radio are continuing the scheme, albeit in a new format.
