Can anyone identify the carving on this softwood platter, at least 90 years old? No idea how it was originally finished, as when found it was thickly lathered with what I imagine was silver radiator paint.

Best advice I can give parents with school aged children: make sure you get school supplies now. There are going to be disruptions to the supply chain that will be felt hard at that time. Xmas too.

32. Missy Elliott: “Get UR Freak On”

“Y’all can’t come close to me,” Missy raps over a fire Timbaland beat. South Asian instruments play in a syncopated style and clock in at a whopping 178 bpm. It’s weird, it’s interesting, it’s cool.

I’m just saying: if you like cheese and you haven’t had this yet, you’re seriously missing out.

A friend recently found out I hadn’t read Lonesome Dove and gave me one of those looks that said, “Have I misjudged you all these years?”

He was right. It is amazing. Like Cormac McCarthy if he wasn’t depressed.
“Lonesome Dove was the kind of book Michael Korda had in mind when he said McMurtry would eventually write ‘the Moby-Dick of the plains’—a physically big book centered on a big subject.” —Thomas Powers

Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove is “the Moby-Dick of the plains”—the great book about the American West.

A #squirrel gets gently brushed and clearly enjoys it.
When the scratching stops, it taps for more. This reaction is common in #mammals, as grooming and gentle touch can trigger calming responses and even release endorphins.

Intelligence isn’t a substitute for knowledge. Being smart doesn’t mean you’ve taken the time to be informed.

Knowledge isn’t a substitute for wisdom. Being informed doesn’t mean you’ve developed good judgment.

Good judgment requires the humility to know what you don’t know.

This message is especially resonant on Good Friday. Those of us who walk The Way are called not to yell, “Crucify him!”, but instead to plead and demand, “Forgive him.”
Our Lord and Saviour did not spend his time as one of us with the respectable few, but with those seen as least deserving.
I think a lot abt how marginalized people are expected to be perfect just to be treated w/ basic dignity, just to access legal protection. But democracy can’t mean rights for the respectable few. It has to mean fair and just treatment even for those seen as least deserving. That’s the real test.

This is even more intriguing, now that I’m transitioning to teaching Algebra I next year.

OpenAI is valued at $300bn. Let’s say three quarters of its value is not from training data, but research. Taking OpenAI as a benchmark, then: I would happily consider a payment of $44.65m for use of one of my books. I don’t understand what the fuss is about…
