A smooth galaxy, observed with the Apache Point 2.5m Telescope in the SDSS survey.

It is at redshift 0.059 (lookback time 819.8 million years) with coordinates (175.36359, 54.30576).

The Deepest View Ever Obtained of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) New improved version with 10 hours of H-Alpha, Sep 2019 In 2013 I gathered 120 hours of data on Centaurus A, and processed the deepest image ever obtained of this magnificent galaxy showing many features and structures not revealed by amateurs before. In Feb 2014 I released an improved version of the image with higher resolution, processed using PixInsight. Then in 2018 I again acquired further data (for what is evidently a never-ending project…), this time in the H-Alpha wavelength. This new re-processed image incorporates the H-Alpha data in order to highlight the impressive emission structures triggered by the relativistic jet from the supermassive central black hole. It also emphasises the many pink hydrogen clouds in the dark dust lane across the centre of the galaxy, and lastly I feel the image showcases the concentric shells and rich background slightly better, while keeping a reasonably subtle natural look. About the Image This image is the realisation of a long time dream of mine: Taking a deep sky image with more than 100 hours of exposure. I set out on this mission in early 2013 and after having gathered 130 hours of data on 46 different nights in 2013 and 2018 I present what I believe is the deepest view ever obtained of Centaurus A. This is likely also the deepest image ever taken with amateur equipment, showing stars as faint as magnitude 25.45. I spent around 40 hours and analysing processing the data...

This expansive panoramic view of Jupiter's equatorial region encompasses the Great Red Spot and two major belts, in addition to sundry other atmospheric phenomena. Twelve monochrome narrow-angle frames were captured by the Voyager 1 space probe between 10:59 and 11:17 UTC on March 1st, 1979. I felt like doing one of the big, pretty ones this time. I thought this was a proto/preplanetary nebula but it might be better described as a young planetary nebula. I'm not entirely sure. When does a planetary nebula go from being a preplanetary nebula to being a regular planetary nebula? It's kind of like the whole Pluto planet thing. Of course they are all planetary nebulas but where do you draw the line between one type and another? To add to the confusion, the name "protoplanetary" is easily confused with protoplanetary disks. I've been using "preplanetary" because that's less confusing but the inclusion of the word "planetary" is still the root of all confusion. Anyway, enough of my rambling. Look back up at NGC 6302. It's amazing. I definitely recommend looking at the original size. There are some very interesting textures in the clouds. Some areas around the brightest central regions are reminiscent of marbled stone or perhaps eddies and currents in a flowing stream of liquid. Data use is somewhat complicated to explain, but is roughly as follows: Stars only, affecting all channels: hst_11504_02_wfc3_uvis_f673n_sci Red: hst_11504_01_wfc3_uvis_f658n_sci Green: hst_11504_01_wfc3_uvis_f502n_sci Blue: hst_11504_02_wfc3_uvis_f469n_sci+hst_11504_02_wfc3_uvis_f373n_sci North is NOT up. It's 38.9° clockwise from up.

This image shows what I believe is the first amateur detection of light echoes from SN1987a - 33 years after the event. The light echoes are produced when the initial flash from SN1987a is subsequently reflected off interstellar dust as light travels outward from the event. Direct light from the supernova was observed on Earth in 1987, and we then see light reflected from dust in the interstellar space arriving later because it has travelled further to reach us. The animation was created by subtracting two Luminance images taken almost 8 years apart, on 24th Oct 2012 and 21st Sep 2020 respectively, in order to create a difference image which was then superimposed on a regular colour image of the area. The expanding light echoes appear as roughly circular concentric arcs, centered on SN1987a's location. This clearly shows how they have expanded during the 8 years. The echoes also appear to be moving outwards at superluminal speed: With a shift of ~47 pixels in the image, and an image resolution of 0.764"/pixel, the movement corresponds to around 28 light years at the distance of the Large Magellanig Cloud where the supernova occurred (163,000 light years away). This is clearly much faster than the speed of light given there are only 8 years between the images. This apparent superluminal speed is only an illusion though...

The Calabash Nebula, pictured here — which has the technical name OH 231.8+04.2 — is a spectacular example of the death of a low-mass star like the sun. This image taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the star going through a rapid transformation from a red giant to a planetary nebula, during which it blows its outer layers of gas and dust out into the surrounding space. The recently ejected material is spat out in opposite directions with immense speed — the gas shown in yellow is moving close to one million kilometers per hour (621,371 miles per hour). Astronomers rarely capture a star in this phase of its evolution because it occurs within the blink of an eye — in astronomical terms. Over the next thousand years the nebula is expected to evolve into a fully-fledged planetary nebula. The nebula is also known as the Rotten Egg Nebula because it contains a lot of sulphur, an element that, when combined with other elements, smells like a rotten egg — but luckily, it resides over 5,000 light-years away in the constellation of Puppis. Despite a very strong wind, I managed to salvage about fifteen minutes of exposure out of an hour and a half of tracking before it set, just enough for a last-minute farewell to Comet Lemmon, capturing it a second time after my first shot in early October. 🔭

The waxing gibbous Moon appears golden in this image, with the eastern “shore” of Mare Imbrium in the upper right still in sunlight, but the rest of the impact basin is now in darkness. The terminator boundary highlights a number of prominent craters whose floors are already in night.
