Numerators are easy, denominators are hard. Have mass, give charge, will measure. Solidly mid-career? Associate Prof, North Philadelphia.
Found out my well scored MIRA will not be funded, as I am MPI on too many grants. Not close to the direct cost cap at all, but the optics of 5 projects look bad. I understand that and really hope the grant ends up keeping someone else’s lab open. But man it hurts.

Happy New Year. I’m pleased to report publication of the Ducker lab’s latest cancer metabolism paper led by graduate student Kyle Dunlap in @cp-cellreports.bsky.social

SLC7A5 is required for cancer cell growth under arginine-limited conditions
Metabolic adaptations are key to cancer cell survival in nutrient-limited microenvironments, but strategies for coping with arginine scarcity are poorly understood. Dunlap et al. use CRISPR screening and metabolomics to identify the plasma membrane transporter SLC7A5 as a citrulline transporter essential for cancer cell growth under arginine limitation.

In back to back thesis committee meetings 4/8 professors had daycare age children. All of us had coughs from being sick recently. ‘Tis the season.

At the end of the day, she said, “I can’t believe they pay you just to go to meetings all day.”

She thought for a minute and said, “I guess they would have to pay you.”

Boy, did I feel seen.

New preprint alert! First authors Drs. Naveen Tangudu and Raquel Buj used both CRISPR screens and pharmacological approaches to identify novel metabolic vulnerabilities of cancers with p16 loss. Should we re-think anti-metabolites in this context? 🧪

Having a 301 area code phone number is like a cheat code at getting professors to call you back. They all think I’m the NIH 😂🥸😂
