An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: I have observed what seems to be a sort of caste system within the ranks of the merchants here. It is not a system of oppression, as the castes enforced by the Gods often were, but one of privilege. Many aspects of trade here are restricted to those in the higher castes; you may not seek an audience with the upper councils, deal in certain “high-risk” goods, or access certain facilities within the city unless you are of an appropriate rank. New and aspiring merchants, or those with no local connections or global reputation, start at the bottom caste and can work their way only through conducting business and forming connections with other merchants. As I described before, the people of Emberfall are incredibly straightforward and honest, but they are not so naive as to expect others to follow those same customs; foreign merchants are welcomed, but they must prove through action that they are capable of fair and honest trade. Ascending the ranks within this merchant caste can only be achieved through the recommendation of others. There seem to be six tiers, and respected members of the second tier and above form councils that simultaneously moderate the merchants and serve as the nation’s governing body. Anyone can join a council of their tier or below, if they accept the work that comes with it, and it is these council members who are responsible for vetting and promoting merchants from the lower castes. Essentially, one must form connections and impress their superiors to gain a higher status.

An excerpt from Mythos, Chapter 1. It reads as follows: Jackie counted six Kritta guards within the stronghold, though there were likely at least a couple more within the buildings. They were crouched within the archway which served as the main entrance to said stronghold, on the south wall; a pillar, seemingly part of some other ruin, had fallen through the left side of the arch, providing ample cover. The stronghold resembled a dzong—a mountain temple, with towering, sloped outer walls built of smooth white stone, each corner featuring a tall watchtower with red flared roofs, all surrounding a small selection of buildings. Each of the buildings hugged the edges of the outer walls, leaving the center a wide, open courtyard; scattered across the ground were rectangular stone foundations where additional buildings should’ve been. To the left, several makeshift scaffolds formed platforms leading up onto the western wall; three Kritta wielding slings stood guard there, watching over their territory from above. Another guard, wielding a mace, stood atop the east wall, looking out at the wasteland beyond; a crumbled portion of the wall formed a slope leading down from it to the courtyard. The fifth guard was wandering aimlessly around the center of the stronghold, a sword in one hand and a half-eaten beetle in the other. Of particular note to Jackie were the buildings along the back wall. The leftmost appeared to be a large storehouse. Their eyes moved to its right, to a building almost completely caved-in; to its right was a building whose entrance had been covered by a large sheet of metal. A second swordsman—guard number six—sat on the ground, leaning back on the wall of the storehouse as it took a leisurely nap.

An excerpt from Mythos, chapter 7. It reads as follows: There was a crash, and the impact cleanly broke several bricks free from the leaning tower wall. They careened straight down, and their absence quickly resulted in a chain reaction, more and more bricks breaking free from the confines of the wall until a large hole had formed. A landslide of loosened debris surged downward, and— Directly beneath it all, the Kumori’s many voices all cut out at once, its head snapping upwards to glare at the falling stones with a bloodshot eye. The great spider in a child’s body became a blur of movement, rising in a spiral as its skeletal arms stretched out and whipped around. Three arms planted their palms firmly against the mud, and the rest shot upward. The sound of bone striking stone rang out like a series of rapid shotgun blasts as a barrage of bony fists met the falling rocks, sending showers of stone shrapnel up into the air.

An excerpt from Mythos, Chapter 10. It reads as follows: Jackie: “Good work, by the way. Thirty seconds to spare, give or take.” Helena: “Why am I not surprised you were counting?” She offered a dry remark in exchange, letting a smile slip across her lips. It was nice to have a distraction from the pain in her leg. “What’s got you in such a good mood? We nearly died.” Jackie: “For one, you were able to say ‘nearly’. But besides that…” They trailed off and tapped their chin, letting out an almost nervous chuckle, “I just got a nice reminder of how scary Mimics are. I’m glad she’s our friend.” Helena: “I have a feeling she’s going to be upset by that statement.” Jackie: “Can she even hear us like that?” They pondered, looking back at Helena and the scythe. “I guess so, since she was transforming based on your commands. Nice idea, that.” With that, Helena set the scythe down beside her. After a moment it expanded, and in the blink of an eye it became a grey-haired girl—Lii had returned. The first thing she did was inhale deeply, as though she’d been holding her breath the entire time she was an object. She then turned to Jackie with a pout, Lii: “A-am I really that scary..?” Jackie patted the shell of the Kuzumade beneath them. “You tore this thing’s face off.”

An excerpt from Mythos, Chapter 14. It reads as follows: Jahd: “Y’know, the term ‘duel’ implies a degree of honor.” He spoke calmly as he stepped out of the tent. A quick look at each of the others around had them each lowering their weapons, falling to the sidelines to serve as witnesses. Strade: “That’s rich, comin’ from you.” He stood, drawing a second knife in his other hand. “If I hadn’t gone for it first, you—“ Jahd: “Ah ah ah, I’m gonna stop ye there.” He wagged a finger at Strade, then yanked at his sword, unclipping the scabbard from his belt. It was the larger, two-handed one; he raised it up and held it with one hand covering both the hilt and scabbard, keeping it sheathed. “That’s slander, y’know.” Strade clicked his tongue. “I’m really startin’ not to like you. Draw your steel.” Jahd: “No thanks.” His expression remained neutral, perhaps slightly amused. “I don’t need it.”

An excerpt of the new chapter. It reads as follows: As Ezekiel was so kind to report, we stayed the night in the city of Silverchar. Emberfall is not unlike Gravalt in that it is a place of drastic contrasts between its major cities and the rest of the nation. Around half of its native population live in small villages that stretch deep even into the mountains, usually along the ceaseless lava flows that stretch down from Mt Magma like rivers. I always thought ‘Magma’ to be a silly name for a volcano, but I do concur with Ezekiel’s opinion on Emberfell names. The Emberfell are straightforward to a fault, but there is a certain charm to their naming schemes. Silverchar is another example; it is built atop a ridge of stone that shines a pristine, silvery white in the morning sun, yet it is charred by the lava river that cascades down the cliff like a slow-motion waterfall.

Some officials from within the central tower seemingly learned of my arrival here in Erenley. What need they have of me, I do not know, but they have requested my immediate presence. Due to Gravalt’s close relationship with the United Mortals, many of Erenley’s top officials have close ties to the alliance. I’ve no doubt my own involvement with the UM is what drew their attention. Whatever task they hold is of great importance, no doubt, so I shall not keep them waiting longer than it takes to write this short entry. Alicia and I were planning to explore the tower either way, so I suppose this is not a terrible diversion. She is ready, so off we go. —Kirra

A snippet from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Much as it pains me to say, it was not uncommon for mortalkind to war against each other throughout the Holy Wars. Many groups and nations were desperate for resources, and Gravalt was a frequent victim of such attacks due to its abundance of valuable resources. Its people are hardy, and it benefited from an army that naturally resupplied itself as Fae were born from the nearby Ley, but it likely would not remain standing as it is today without the steadfast support of the United Mortals. Fighting the Holy Wars naturally required a large number of resources. Not just metal with which to forge weapons and armor, but magically-charged minerals used in artificing and the creation of Relics. Gravalt has both in great quantities, so it was a key member of the United Mortals. Due to its importance to the Holy Wars, Gravalt’s capital, Erenley, is one of the largest and most fortified cities in the world. Even at the nation’s peak, that single city was home to over four-fifths of Gravalt’s population. To my knowledge, Erenley has continued to prosper, but the rest of Gravalt has seen a significant downturn following the end of the Holy Wars.

A snippet of Mythos, Chapter 1. It reads as follows: Meanwhile, oblivious to the siblings’ internal misunderstanding, a sparkle formed in Jackie’s eyes. Their expression became one of excitement and awe, and in seconds the efficient killer had been all but replaced by a starstruck admirer. Jackie: "You two, you’re… Humans? Like me?" Sam: "Er, yes?" Jackie: "Really!?" Ignoring the wound on their side, they ran up to Sam, dropping their weapon to clasp his hands as they stared with sparkles in their eyes. Flustered by the sudden lack of personal space, he merely manages to squeak out, Sam: "U-um, I’m pretty sure?" Noticing his discomfort, Jackie stepped back, raising their hands apologetically. Jackie: "Sorry, sorry, I just… I haven’t seen another Human since I… since…" And, as a natural consequence of disregarding their wound, they lost their balance and toppled to the floor.

It reads as follows: I touched on this concept briefly in my previous entry, but Undead come in multiple forms—not just the different races (Zombies, Ghosts, Wights), but the ways in which their souls are recycled, as well. Alicia appears to be what is called a “complete reincarnation”; the rarest of these forms. A reincarnation is what occurs when the Cycle transplants a single soul into a new body completely intact—or, on occasion, when an intact soul is paired with very weak souls and assumes complete control over the new, combined soul. Such reincarnations maintain the complete memories and personality of their previous life; this includes their death, and as such is usually quite traumatizing at first.

A snippet of the chapter. It reads as follows: February 13th, 912 I wrote a letter for Cyrus and entrusted it to the Harpies, who assured me they’d pass it along to any travelers heading south. I am unsure if it will reach him; either way, I shall write again when I reach Gravalt. Hopefully there will be a courier there. I am still traveling the steppe. After another day with the Harpies, I bid them farewell and disembarked from Karrygeus. One of the Harpies carried me back down to the ground, which was only slightly terrifying. They were able to tell me the rough locations of the other behemoths and some other large packs of roaming monsters, as well as all the Ovcharkan villages in my path, so travel since has gone much smoother. I am currently stopped in an Ovcharkan village approximately two thirds of the way to Gravalt. I have had much time to ponder, but have not encountered much to write about. I have, however, realized an issue in my writing which I wish to correct with this entry. As I travel, I have written about the nations and peoples I encounter, about their cultures and the races themselves. I realized that I neglected to write at all about my own people, the Dryads, in part because I only began writing after I embarked from Yggdrasil. My time in Toskila made it quite clear that we are a deeply misunderstood race. Many seemed to revere my people as some sort of saviors or deities; in reality, we are just another race of people, no different than any other. I am quite extensively knowledgeable when it comes to my people, so I apologize if the following entry is long-winded.

A snippet of the chapter. It reads as follows: Jackie had determined without a shadow of a doubt that they were being followed. The others, even as cautious as they were, had yet to notice. But by what? Was it the same threat that Strade warned about? If so, why was it following them instead of hunting for Strade? Jackie glanced around at their surroundings as thoughts swam around their head. As they’d trekked down the right path the rolling hills of the wasteland had flattened, being overtaken by a sparse forest of twisted trees. The lack of hills here meant the paths weren’t limited to twisting valleys, instead spreading out in all directions and winding between clusters of trees—no, it would be more accurate to say that the openness of this region resulted in there being no defined paths at all. It was an environment Jackie had learned to avoid in the past. While the hilly paths were generally clear of foliage, here there were small patches of poison grass dotted everywhere, even amid the paths—and with that came an increased frequency of the troublesome monsters that could pass through it safely. The grass did seem to avoid the extensive, twisted roots of the bloodred trees, making the whole region at least theoretically walkable, but it would only take a single tumble for that to backfire; it was a risk Jackie was not intent on taking. The only upside was that the tree cover made for a more pleasant walk.

A snippet from Mythos, Chapter 9. It reads as follows: Their hurried speech was interrupted as the increasingly-loud footfalls to their left overtook them. The snaking shadow of a great beast scurried ahead through the brush, and then the head emerged with a chilling rattle. The Kuzumade blocked the path forward, staring the group down. The beast was a massive centipede, its long, flat body over a meter wide. Thick, jet-black scales coated it like heavy plate armor, two jagged spikes protruding out in either direction from the top of each plate. Lining its sides, built into its armor, were colorless crystals, each like a window into its many gaping stomachs. Bright yellow legs emerged from beneath the armor, their sharpened ends puncturing the ground with each scuttling step. Beneath the black armor and bright legs, the tough skin of the creature itself bore a purplish hue. Much unlike the common insect it resembled, its mouth was large and squarish. Large mandibles flanked either side, and two yellow scythe-like arms were neatly folded beneath the monster’s chin. The group slid to a stop as the monster blocked their path, each placing their hands on their weapons. The Kuzumade stared back at them with four dark, beady eyes, its many legs rising and lowering in a wave pattern as it studied them. Then, the sound began. It came as a deep rumbling at first, but the low noise was quickly joined by a sharp hiss and a sickening gurgling, each spilling out of the monster’s wriggling jaw. As the sound grew in volume, the crystals lining each side of its body lit up one by one, each glowing an alternating purple or green.

A snippet of the chapter. It reads as follows: After spending around two days on one’s back, I have began to ponder about the fate of the behemoths. According to the Harpies, they have established villages on eleven of them. They are unsure if there are any more across the steppe, but it is unlikely. That means the population of this species is under a dozen. They are absurd, monstrous, and destructive creatures, yes, but I believe the behemoths have just as much a right to exist as any other. Nobody knows how the behemoths reproduce, or if they even can. Nobody knows their lifespan. One day, we could wake up and find that all of these massive creatures are simply gone. Is that not a little sad?

Once again I lay behind the crest of a hill, wasting the hours away as a beast passes me by. What stands before me is a behemoth. To be clear, that is not a description, but the creature’s actual name. A titanically large creature of chitin and muscle, one that feasts on entire herds of prey and grazes entire hills at a time. Legends say the steppe was once a grand forest, but that the trees were wiped out as behemoths grazed on them like grass.

A snippet from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Shortly into my day of study, a tragedy struck. A recently-embarked hunting band returned early, reporting that a hydra was moving near the city. They are large, powerful, and bloodthirsty monsters, and could wreak much havoc if one managed to reach the city. It was decided that several hunting parties would embark together to fell the beast before it could come closer. Seeing this as a valuable research opportunity, I volunteered my assistance to this missions. A few clearly had mixed feelings on bringing an outsider, but most of the hunters seemed delighted or relieved to have a Dryad in their company. Many are men and women who fought in the Holy Wars and know exactly how effective my kind can be in environments like these. I am writing this as the hunters prepare to embark. I shall report further at nightfall.
