An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: None of the terms Viz or Delia provided had been the same as the nation Lii had mentioned before—Elysium, she’d called it. Had it disappeared, or perhaps become one of the two warring nations that now occupied the land? Well, these two had been forthcoming so far. Might as well just ask. Jackie: “You three ever heard of a place called Elysium?” A moment later they added, “Check.” Delia and Viz cast puzzled gazes at Jackie while Raffica cocked her head. Viz: “Uh, in history books, sure.”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Jackie had a vague plan in mind when they set out to gather information. They wanted to learn about two things: Humans and common sense. Their first goal, of course, had been to see Makala; they’d ended up learning much more about Humans there than expected, which was a nice bonus. Asking anyone else about it might raise suspicion, so that was out of the question; luckily, they could research their ancestors and gain some common sense at the same time. The people here spoke the same language as them—thank Eve—so it stood to reason that they might write in the same language, as well. If they could get their hands on some books—particularly historical texts—they could learn about the events that led to their race’s ‘extinction’ while also learning more about the outside world’s culture. While learning about Humans was important, gaining some common knowledge would likely prove even more valuable. Many things that were universally understood out here did not exist in the Heap, leaving Jackie with various gaping holes in their ability to understand the world around them. They hadn’t even known Palooza was a ‘cat’ until Raffica said the word while scratching its chin.

It reads as follows: Sils: “It ain’t easy to just accept that some extinct race walked right outta the Heap.” Helena: “I wouldn’t exactly say we ‘walked right out’, but…” Sils: “Things don’t escape the Heap often, courtesy of the Basilisks. Nine times outta ten, they’re Mimics. Ten times outta ten, we kill ‘em, whatever they are.” Strade placed a hand on one of the knives at his belt, snarling. “That what this is? Want to kill us outta sight of your lackeys?” Sils narrowed her green eyes with amusement. “Please. First of all, my guys ain’t that weak-stomached. Second, if Jahd thought y’all were a serious danger, he wouldn’ta let you get half this far.” Jahd: “Third of all,” he said as he stepped forward, placing himself at the edge of Sils’s table, “I’ll have ta remove ye if ye threaten the cap’n.”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Naturally, there wasn’t just one Basilisk. There were many, and they were condensed into a much smaller space than Jackie had expected even in their worst estimates. They counted at least half a dozen massive shapes lurching through the distant jungle nearby; those were just the ones they could see well enough to count. This was the impassable barrier that guarded the edge of the world. Once one Basilisk awoke, it would awaken its neighbors in turn. The simple chain reaction converted the jungle into a hellscape of lumbering shadows and imminent doom. And they were stuck right in the middle of it.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: The mere concept of an “outside world” nagged at Jackie’s mind. What separated the outside from the Forgotten Heap? Lii had described how the ecology was completely different, how the monsters of the Heap were extreme rarities rather than commonplace, how people gathered in large groups—nations and kingdoms, even—without any regard for a taboo. They doubted creatures like Kumori or Mimics or Carrion would be effected much by things such as climate or environment. What prevented them from being as commonplace on the outside as they were here? There was only one natural conclusion—at the edge of this world and the outside lay an obstacle more terrifying than anything that lived within the Heap. At the very least, it was something uniquely tailored to keeping the wasteland’s monsters inside. Lii had entered the Heap alone, so it surely wasn’t an impassible obstacle, but it worried Jackie nonetheless. How had she gotten past it? Well, she was sitting right there. No harm in asking.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: The Kuzumade’s methodology was a bit different than expected, though. Rather than charge straight for Jackie, it scurried backwards to the mouth of the clearing—where it had entered. Then, swiftly reversing its waves of scuttling feet, it lurched along the outside edge of the clearing, its body drawing a half-circle around the ruins until it reached the exit on the opposite side. Once there it continued its forward charge, finally turning directly to Jackie. It was nothing if not thorough. The beast would rather expose a large swath of its body to attack than leave even the smallest opportunity for any of its prey to escape. Jackie couldn’t help but wonder if a handful of Humans were even worth the effort; surely all five of them wouldn’t leave a dent in the nourishment such a massive creature needed to survive. They might have been able to escape, if only giant centipedes understood the sunk cost fallacy. (Italicized) Two minutes, fifteen seconds.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Then, the sound began. It came as a deep rumbling at first, but the low noise was quickly joined by a sharp hiss and a sickening gurgling, each spilling out of the monster’s wriggling jaw. As the sound grew in volume, the crystals lining each side of its body lit up one by one, each glowing an alternating purple or green. The creature’s jaw dropped open, bereft of teeth, revealing only the deep void of its innards. Then, deep within that void, a sickly color made itself known as liquid rushed forth at immense speed. Jackie shouted, but it was drowned out by the incessant hiss emanating from the Kuzumade’s maw. From the moment the rush of acid became visible, only a fraction of a second passed before it was jettisoned out of the monster’s mouth, a destructive beam of corrosion. The beam cut right through Jackie and their companions, reducing them to smoldering flesh—thankfully, such a thing did not come to pass.

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: Jackie found the smell of smoke to be quite pleasant. This wasn’t necessarily because they thought it smelled good; everything else in the Forgotten Heap smelled of blood or rot, so smoke won by default as the only alternative. Both of those smells were strong here in the Kumori’s lair. They’d gone to the effort of dragging the monster’s body out of the ruins, but the ground was still stained with its blood, and the air still stank of its victims; it was remarkable how well the smell of death clung to bones. As if to spite the stench, Jackie took a deep breath, filling their nostrils with the burning sensation of smoke instead. They then proceeded to cough harshly. They were seated against the doorway of the eastern tower, a smoldering campfire sitting inside the structure behind them. Once it was clear they would be spending the night here, the group had determined this to be the most stable of the surrounding structures; it was also tall enough to mask the smoke and light of their fire. Their companions sat around the fire inside, presumably sleeping. Jackie had volunteered to be the first watch; they had far too much to think about, so they doubted they’d sleep anytime soon either way.

It reads as follows: Jackie: “So, how long were you hibernating, anyway?~” After admiring her ferocious appetite for a while, Jackie finally posed one of their many curiosities in a singsong tone. Lii: “Um…” She paused for a moment to take a deep breath, having neglected to breath while she ate. “I’m n-not sure, actually. I doubt it was that long, though. Maybe five, ten… um, twenty years at the most.” Sam: “At the most?” He scratched his head. “How old even are you?” Lii: “Um… around a hundred?” She gave the question only a moment of thought before offering an absurd answer rather nonchalantly, then returned her full attention to her food. Strade clicked his tongue at her reply. “Yeah, as if. You look like a kid.” Sam: “She looks our age.” Strade: “She looks your age.”

An excerpt from the new chapter. It reads as follows: I have observed what seems to be a sort of caste system within the ranks of the merchants here. It is not a system of oppression, as the castes enforced by the Gods often were, but one of privilege. Many aspects of trade here are restricted to those in the higher castes; you may not seek an audience with the upper councils, deal in certain “high-risk” goods, or access certain facilities within the city unless you are of an appropriate rank. New and aspiring merchants, or those with no local connections or global reputation, start at the bottom caste and can work their way only through conducting business and forming connections with other merchants. As I described before, the people of Emberfall are incredibly straightforward and honest, but they are not so naive as to expect others to follow those same customs; foreign merchants are welcomed, but they must prove through action that they are capable of fair and honest trade. Ascending the ranks within this merchant caste can only be achieved through the recommendation of others. There seem to be six tiers, and respected members of the second tier and above form councils that simultaneously moderate the merchants and serve as the nation’s governing body. Anyone can join a council of their tier or below, if they accept the work that comes with it, and it is these council members who are responsible for vetting and promoting merchants from the lower castes. Essentially, one must form connections and impress their superiors to gain a higher status.

An excerpt from Mythos, Chapter 1. It reads as follows: Jackie counted six Kritta guards within the stronghold, though there were likely at least a couple more within the buildings. They were crouched within the archway which served as the main entrance to said stronghold, on the south wall; a pillar, seemingly part of some other ruin, had fallen through the left side of the arch, providing ample cover. The stronghold resembled a dzong—a mountain temple, with towering, sloped outer walls built of smooth white stone, each corner featuring a tall watchtower with red flared roofs, all surrounding a small selection of buildings. Each of the buildings hugged the edges of the outer walls, leaving the center a wide, open courtyard; scattered across the ground were rectangular stone foundations where additional buildings should’ve been. To the left, several makeshift scaffolds formed platforms leading up onto the western wall; three Kritta wielding slings stood guard there, watching over their territory from above. Another guard, wielding a mace, stood atop the east wall, looking out at the wasteland beyond; a crumbled portion of the wall formed a slope leading down from it to the courtyard. The fifth guard was wandering aimlessly around the center of the stronghold, a sword in one hand and a half-eaten beetle in the other. Of particular note to Jackie were the buildings along the back wall. The leftmost appeared to be a large storehouse. Their eyes moved to its right, to a building almost completely caved-in; to its right was a building whose entrance had been covered by a large sheet of metal. A second swordsman—guard number six—sat on the ground, leaning back on the wall of the storehouse as it took a leisurely nap.

An excerpt from Mythos, chapter 7. It reads as follows: There was a crash, and the impact cleanly broke several bricks free from the leaning tower wall. They careened straight down, and their absence quickly resulted in a chain reaction, more and more bricks breaking free from the confines of the wall until a large hole had formed. A landslide of loosened debris surged downward, and— Directly beneath it all, the Kumori’s many voices all cut out at once, its head snapping upwards to glare at the falling stones with a bloodshot eye. The great spider in a child’s body became a blur of movement, rising in a spiral as its skeletal arms stretched out and whipped around. Three arms planted their palms firmly against the mud, and the rest shot upward. The sound of bone striking stone rang out like a series of rapid shotgun blasts as a barrage of bony fists met the falling rocks, sending showers of stone shrapnel up into the air.

An excerpt from Mythos, Chapter 10. It reads as follows: Jackie: “Good work, by the way. Thirty seconds to spare, give or take.” Helena: “Why am I not surprised you were counting?” She offered a dry remark in exchange, letting a smile slip across her lips. It was nice to have a distraction from the pain in her leg. “What’s got you in such a good mood? We nearly died.” Jackie: “For one, you were able to say ‘nearly’. But besides that…” They trailed off and tapped their chin, letting out an almost nervous chuckle, “I just got a nice reminder of how scary Mimics are. I’m glad she’s our friend.” Helena: “I have a feeling she’s going to be upset by that statement.” Jackie: “Can she even hear us like that?” They pondered, looking back at Helena and the scythe. “I guess so, since she was transforming based on your commands. Nice idea, that.” With that, Helena set the scythe down beside her. After a moment it expanded, and in the blink of an eye it became a grey-haired girl—Lii had returned. The first thing she did was inhale deeply, as though she’d been holding her breath the entire time she was an object. She then turned to Jackie with a pout, Lii: “A-am I really that scary..?” Jackie patted the shell of the Kuzumade beneath them. “You tore this thing’s face off.”

An excerpt from Mythos, Chapter 14. It reads as follows: Jahd: “Y’know, the term ‘duel’ implies a degree of honor.” He spoke calmly as he stepped out of the tent. A quick look at each of the others around had them each lowering their weapons, falling to the sidelines to serve as witnesses. Strade: “That’s rich, comin’ from you.” He stood, drawing a second knife in his other hand. “If I hadn’t gone for it first, you—“ Jahd: “Ah ah ah, I’m gonna stop ye there.” He wagged a finger at Strade, then yanked at his sword, unclipping the scabbard from his belt. It was the larger, two-handed one; he raised it up and held it with one hand covering both the hilt and scabbard, keeping it sheathed. “That’s slander, y’know.” Strade clicked his tongue. “I’m really startin’ not to like you. Draw your steel.” Jahd: “No thanks.” His expression remained neutral, perhaps slightly amused. “I don’t need it.”

An excerpt of the new chapter. It reads as follows: As Ezekiel was so kind to report, we stayed the night in the city of Silverchar. Emberfall is not unlike Gravalt in that it is a place of drastic contrasts between its major cities and the rest of the nation. Around half of its native population live in small villages that stretch deep even into the mountains, usually along the ceaseless lava flows that stretch down from Mt Magma like rivers. I always thought ‘Magma’ to be a silly name for a volcano, but I do concur with Ezekiel’s opinion on Emberfell names. The Emberfell are straightforward to a fault, but there is a certain charm to their naming schemes. Silverchar is another example; it is built atop a ridge of stone that shines a pristine, silvery white in the morning sun, yet it is charred by the lava river that cascades down the cliff like a slow-motion waterfall.

An excerpt from the chapter. It reads as follows: February 21st, 912 I was quite surprised to awaken this morning having received a summons. Some officials from within the central tower seemingly learned of my arrival here in Erenley. What need they have of me, I do not know, but they have requested my immediate presence. Due to Gravalt’s close relationship with the United Mortals, many of Erenley’s top officials have close ties to the alliance. I’ve no doubt my own involvement with the UM is what drew their attention. Whatever task they hold is of great importance, no doubt, so I shall not keep them waiting longer than it takes to write this short entry. Alicia and I were planning to explore the tower either way, so I suppose this is not a terrible diversion. She is ready, so off we go. —Kirra
