Hi Bluesky, I’ve been here a while but haven’t posted much. I’m a designer working on Signal, occasional oil painter, and new dad.

Going to be posting here more, as it’s so refreshing to escape the algorithmic slop of *checks notes* literally everywhere else.

Right now there are a lot of new eyes on Signal, and not all of them are familiar with secure messaging and its nuances. Which means there’s misinfo flying around that might drive people away from Signal and private communications. 1/

We will never have free speech OR safety for marginalized people on platforms owned and controlled by billionaires & monopolists.

My cranky ass opinion is we should spend less time worrying about what Zuck says and more time building a movement to dismantle Big Tech & build the Internet we need

Wishing yet again that I could build my own phone by buying parts and plugging it together, like you can with a PC. Or at least replace parts when they break.

Thanks Apple

We’ve improved private group video calls in Signal with new features, incl. call links.

Create a link that anyone on Signal can use to join a group call *without* having to join a Signal group chat first

There will definitely be a bunch of comprehensive guides going around, but I also know ppl are scared and overwhelmed and prob won't read them.

So here's the most basic things I think every activist group / advocacy nonprofit / etc should be thinking about.

“AI tutors could help with one-on-one instruction or repetitive sports drills.”

It’s easier to imagine AI tutors than fucking paying human tutors a living wage.
This is unintentionally bleak in a way that’s hard to describe, but maybe best epitomized by this quote:

“It is a little cool to think of cemeteries in the future that are literally haunted by motion-activated holograms…”

No. Not cool. Not cool at all.

We ended up talking about how her focus for Signal goes beyond encryption or privacy, to creating an alternative to surveillance capitalism—or even capitalism, period.

My dudes, Telegram is not an e2e messaging app like Signal or WhatsApp. Telegram is more like Twitter. It is a social media app that is mostly public content that also happens to have DMs, where you can turn on e2e messaging with questionable cryptography that most people never even bother to use.

The endless screaming you may hear is me, thinking about all the implications of this level of surveillance used for mundane conveniences and being processed by one of the most invasive and extractive companies the world has ever known.
“If Google's AI agent can help regular people never lose their glasses ever again (or their keys or other stuff at home or at work), then I think we have a killer app.” 😢
What's the killer AI app for consumers? Google finally has a contender.
If Google's AI agents can help you remember where you left your glasses, a lot of regular people will start using generative AI.
