Anchorite and Arachnid Dark, clammy and cramped, My world abuts Moss-fringed, head-heighted heavens. From my cell’s cardinal points, Four spiders work away at their webs Night after night, Day upon day. Cunning crafters, they crave no respite. Their bodies - oiled, grimed, and Engorged - Warp silk line upon silk line, Weft sticky spiral after sticky spiral, in Unyielding rounds of Self-same prayer threaded Night after night, Day upon day, in an Unslacking orgy of monotony. Their four webs merge into a Nexus of gossamer monstrosity. Their four turgid bottoms romp in the Dank stench of dust-choked obscurity. Dew-beaded filaments Titillate my brow, Gum up my lashes: Ashen-white strands - So light, so soft – like Fine spittle spun from Marrow. With bestial fervour, Four fat spiders Cavort, carouse as One. There is, of course, another perspective on this topic. Local officials might argue that the use of non-disclosure agreements is both lawful and routine in many types of economic development, not just for data centers. Our response is that just because a practice is currently legal, it doesn’t mean that it should remain that way. And even if local governments frequently join confidentiality agreements, it doesn’t mean that they are in the interest of local democracy. For example, when one local government released two NDAs to us, it asked that we keep the information as confidential as possible out of fear that it could jeopardize its data-center projects that were in the works, but not yet publicly announced. Why would sharing this information put the deals in jeopardy? If they are in the public interest, the projects should be able to withstand scrutiny even as they develop.

Autumn Singularity Pristine, primordial - Autumn. Blaze of All-too-brief crystalline days Splintering into scintillae that Flare, fade then Fold into Gloaming. Miraculous as those First seconds struck ex nihilo: Infinitely short, Neither One, neither Nought, Voiced, not glossed - Lucid, unelucidated. Peened scythe Preens its whetted edge of Grain remains that Spark, scatter, Settle over Dark-mattered earth. In desolate, clod-clustered Spasms, earth strains towards the Hunter’s Moon, Pines for the plough – a Harrowed hankering. Season in humility Trims its luminosity. Glare pared away, All Saints empties out into Nothingness bordering All. Winter’s Gift: Clarity. Trees seen clearly, singly: the Ground that sustains them - now Naked to the eye - Sustains all. In October, Birdsong has long since Receded down the Sun’s Path, but Saint Lucy’s Storms are still far off. Inspiration for this piece came in part from Margi Prideaux’s _Fire: A Message from the Edge of Climate Catastrophe_. This amazing book manages to be both a gripping personal account of living through Australia’s Black Summer fires of 2019-20, as well as a professional analysis of the factors that give rise to the more frequent and devastating climate-related catastrophes of our time. At one point in the book, in the immediate aftermath of the fire, Prideaux recounts how it felt to bear witness to death, destruction, and ruin in such a personal way—to her own ecosystem and community. She describes a scene involving countless carcasses of animals who had attempted to flee the fire but had inevitably perished: twisted remains caught in fences; those mummified in place while running on stumps, feet missing; and birds struck down in mid-flight. My painting imagines the terror of the moments just before. Mixed media collage: The background is a traditional (non-digital) painting in ink; red tones dominate. The foreground shows a semi-closeup photograph of a bird awkwardly clinging to two branches, one in each foot, mouth open. The bird appears to be backlit.
