On bitterest nights, we watch for moonshadows at the forest edge. Lost beasts returning to our island. Once theirs.

Darker on darkness. Restless shapes of elk and bear, lynx and wolf.

Their calls we hear as blessing or warning. The forest, they say, will rule this island again.
