NGC 3576/3603 - The Statue of Liberty Nebula - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - https://flic.kr/p/kdpo6Y
This rich and complex scene shows the glowing clouds of NGC 3576 and NGC3603 in the Southern constellation of Carina. The large pink nebula on the right is NGC 3576, an impressive looking but relatively close and small nebula in the Sagittarius Arm of our Milky Way galaxy, some 9,000 light years away. On the left is the much more distant and larger NGC 3603, located a further 14,000 light years behind NGC 3576. NGC 3576 is also known as the Statue of Liberty Nebula because of the striking shape visible in the core. The delicate loops are approximately 100 light years wide and are caused by material being blown outwards by the intense radiation pressure from young stars in the centre of the nebula. Most of these stars are hidden from our view in the bright area at the base of the loops. The more distant NGC 3603 on the left is noticeably reddened due to obscuring interstellar dust and appears almost deep red in comparison with the un-obscured pink NGC 3576 on the right. NGC3603 is the largest nebula in our galaxy and is classified as a giant HII region. It would appear as a noticeable large reddish glow to observers in other galaxies. A very bright massive central star cluster can be seen lighting up this nebula, and although these stars are in reality all young and blue they appear yellow to us because of the intervening dust. I have updated this to remove Gomez's Hamburger, which is not a planetary nebula but rather a protoplanetary disk. The picturesque Hen 2-437 has taken its place. See previous version of the collage, now renamed "99 Planetary Nebulas" (I could put "And a Protoplanetary Disk" as a subtitle, hehe!) here. Also, Flickr seems to be allowing me to upload the 10000 pixel wide version now. The previous one was uploaded at half that size. It was bugging out or something last time I tried. Here is a copy of the original description for your convenience, since it still applies: Inspired by insect illustration posters, this is a large collage of planetary nebulas I put together bit by bit as I processed them. All are presented north up and at apparent size relative to one another--I did not rotate or resize them in order to satisfy compositional aesthetics (if you spot any errors, let me know). Colors are aesthetic choices, especially since most planetary nebulas are imaged with narrowband filters. How many of them can you identify?

Visible here is a small portion of the large Rosette Nebula (NGC 2237), centered on its central cluster of stars; NGC 2244. This large round nebula lies some 5000 light years away and can be found in the constellation Monoceros near Orion. In optical wide field images the entire nebula appears strikingly similar to the petals of a red rose, hence the name. The image is constructed from exposures in three very narrow (3nm) wavelength bands corresponding to the emission profiles of ionised Hydrogen, Oxygen and Sulphur to form the resulting detailed and brightly coloured scene. Several striking shapes can be seen here, many of which resemble animals of various kinds. In particular the figure of a leaping Cheetah is very obvious near the centre. These dark shapes are denser clouds of dust and gas, slowly being eroded away by the intense ultraviolet radiation from the young stars in the central cluster. These stars have themselves condensed out of the nebula relatively recently. The brightest cluster members, HD 46223 and HD 46150, are massive O-type stars with stellar winds and radiation powerful enough to have cleared the nebula's central cavity around the cluster. NGC 3293, often referred to as the Gem Cluster, is a spectacular bright open star cluster located in the constellation of Carina. In this narrowband bicolour image the delicate nebulosity across the entire background really stands out. It is one of the Southern Sky's finest binocular objects and consists of nearly one hundred stars huddled together in a tight group, with a contrasting bright red supergiant near it's centre - similar in appearance to Kappa Crucis in the Jewel Box Cluster. Floating against a colourful backdrop of Milky Way stars and red Hydrogen emission, the cluster is also surrounded by a delicate faint blue haze visible in broadband images. The cluster was discovered by Abbé Nicolas Louis de La Caille in 1752 during his expedition to the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. Collaboration with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory Center This image is the result of a collaboration between NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory Center and amateur astrophotographer Rolf Wahl Olsen. It is part of a series of professional-amateur collaboration images and was combined by Science Imager Joseph DePasquale from Chandra X-ray Observatory Center, using both X-ray, optical and infrared data. The image is composed of the following data: My deep 120 hour optical image Centaurus A Extreme Deep Field taken over 43 nights in 2013. 230 hours of Chandra X-ray data gathered over the past 15 years. Infrared data from NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. The combined exposure time is in excess of an astonishing 350 hours, or two weeks; more than the Hubble Ultra Deep Field. Release date: July 1, 2008 This image is a composite of visible (or optical), radio, and X-ray data of the full shell of the supernova remnant from SN 1006. The radio data show much of the extent that the X-ray image shows. In contrast, only a small linear filament in the northwest corner of the shell is visible in the optical data. The object has an angular size of roughly 30 arcminutes (0.5 degree, or about the size of the full moon), and a physical size of 60 light-years (18 parsecs) based on its distance of nearly 7,000 light-years. The small green box along the bright filament at the top of the image corresponds to the dimensions of the Hubble release image. The optical data was obtained at the University of Michigan's 0.9-meter Curtis Schmidt telescope at the National Science Foundation's Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory (CTIO) near La Serena, Chile. H-alpha, continuum-subtracted data were provided by F. Winkler (Middlebury COllege) et al. The X-ray data were acquired from the Chandra X-ray Observatory's AXAF CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) at 0.5-3keV, and were provided by J. Hughes (Rutgers University) et al. The radio data, supplied by K. NASA image release January 13, 2011 These images by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope show off two dramatically different face-on views of the spiral galaxy M51, dubbed the Whirlpool Galaxy. The image at left, taken in visible light, highlights the attributes of a typical spiral galaxy, including graceful, curving arms, pink star-forming regions, and brilliant blue strands of star clusters. In the image at right, most of the starlight has been removed, revealing the Whirlpool's skeletal dust structure, as seen in near-infrared light. This new image is the sharpest view of the dense dust in M51. The narrow lanes of dust revealed by Hubble reflect the galaxy's moniker, the Whirlpool Galaxy, as if they were swirling toward the galaxy's core. To map the galaxy's dust structure, researchers collected the galaxy's starlight by combining images taken in visible and near-infrared light. The visible-light image captured only some of the light; the rest was obscured by dust. The near-infrared view, however, revealed more starlight because near-infrared light penetrates dust. The researchers then subtracted the total amount of starlight from both images to see the galaxy's dust structure. The red color in the near-infrared image traces the dust, which is punctuated by hundreds of tiny clumps of stars, each about 65 light-years wide. These stars have never been seen before. The Deepest View Ever Obtained of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) This image is the realisation of a long time dream of mine: Taking a deep sky image with more than 100 hours of exposure. I set out on this mission in early 2013 and after having gathered 120 hours of data on 43 different nights in Feb-May 2013 I present what I believe is the deepest view ever obtained of Centaurus A. This is likely also the deepest image ever taken with amateur equipment, showing stars as faint as magnitude 25.45. I spent around 40 hours and analysing processing the data, with the goal of presenting this majestic Southern galaxy as it has never been seen before - with all the main features showing in one single image, in order to truly get a grasp of what this intriguing object is all about. Visible are some unique features, some of which have never been imaged before by amateurs: * A set of enormous reddish filaments associated with the relativistic jets. * The complete shell structure of the extended halo, showing both the faint outer shells and brighter inner ones. * 709 of the catalogued globular clusters orbiting the galaxy. * Integrated Flux Nebulae permeating the entire field of view around the galaxy. Image Release April 8, 2010 Hubble has snapped a spectacular view of M 66, the largest "player" of the Leo Triplet, and a galaxy with an unusual anatomy: it displays asymmetric spiral arms and an apparently displaced core. The peculiar anatomy is most likely caused by the gravitational pull of the other two members of the trio. The unusual spiral galaxy, Messier 66, is located at a distance of about 35 million light-years in the constellation of Leo. Together with Messier 65 and NGC 3628, Messier 66 is the member of the Leo Triplet, a trio of interacting spiral galaxies, part of the larger Messier 66 group. Messier 66 wins in size over its fellow triplets — it is about 100 000 light-years across. This is a composite of images obtained through the following filters: 814W (near infrared), 555W (green) and H-alpha (showing the glowing of the hydrogen gas). NASA image release June 6, 2010 Like a July 4 fireworks display a young, glittering collection of stars looks like an aerial burst. The cluster is surrounded by clouds of interstellar gas and dust - the raw material for new star formation. The nebula, located 20,000 light-years away in the constellation Carina, contains a central cluster of huge, hot stars, called NGC 3603. This environment is not as peaceful as it looks. Ultraviolet radiation and violent stellar winds have blown out an enormous cavity in the gas and dust enveloping the cluster, providing an unobstructed view of the cluster. Most of the stars in the cluster were born around the same time but differ in size, mass, temperature, and color. The course of a star's life is determined by its mass, so a cluster of a given age will contain stars in various stages of their lives, giving an opportunity for detailed analyses of stellar life cycles. NGC 3603 also contains some of the most massive stars known. These huge stars live fast and die young, burning through their hydrogen fuel quickly and ultimately ending their lives in supernova explosions. Star clusters like NGC 3603 provide important clues to understanding the origin of massive star formation in the early, distant universe. Astronomers also use massive clusters to study distant starbursts that occur when galaxies collide, igniting a flurry of star formation. This image shows what I believe is the first amateur detection of light echoes from SN1987a - 33 years after the event. The light echoes are produced when the initial flash from SN1987a is subsequently reflected off interstellar dust as light travels outward from the event. Direct light from the supernova was observed on Earth in 1987, and we then see light reflected from dust in the interstellar space arriving later because it has travelled further to reach us. The animation was created by subtracting two Luminance images taken almost 8 years apart, on 24th Oct 2012 and 21st Sep 2020 respectively, in order to create a difference image which was then superimposed on a regular colour image of the area. The expanding light echoes appear as roughly circular concentric arcs, centered on SN1987a's location. This clearly shows how they have expanded during the 8 years. The echoes also appear to be moving outwards at superluminal speed: With a shift of ~47 pixels in the image, and an image resolution of 0.764"/pixel, the movement corresponds to around 28 light years at the distance of the Large Magellanig Cloud where the supernova occurred (163,000 light years away). This is clearly much faster than the speed of light given there are only 8 years between the images. This apparent superluminal speed is only an illusion though...

With nearly 70 hours of exposure I wanted to show the majestic barred spiral Messier 83 in all its glory. Visible here is the large halo extending far beyond the bright spiral arms, including sections of the northern stream that curves from the 10 o'clock position and outside the field of view, then enters the field again in the 2 o'clock position behind the bright blue star. The colourful spiral itself is filled with bright red HII regions, enhanced here with 4.25 hours of H-Alpha exposure. Intricate swirling dust lanes trace the spiral arms and merge in a central maelstrom near the bright warmly glowing core. To the left (East) of Messier 83 lies two smaller galaxies PGC 724525 and PGC 48132. These are much further away but show some interesting structures, particularly the upper one has several tidal tails that make it look like a tiny Star Wars TIE Fighter. Visible near the top right is the small and faint dwarf galaxy dw1335-29 which was confirmed to be a companion of Messier 83 in 2018. Messier 83 is classified as being an intermediate between normal and barred spiral galaxies. It is located in the southern constellation Hydra and is one of the show pieces of the southern sky, often referred to as The Southern Pinwheel. The distance to M83 is estimated to be some 15 million light years. M83 is an example of a 'grand design' spiral galaxy with strongly defined spiral arms and shows many pink and blue knots throughout the spiral structures. The pink regions are massiv...
