Jay, I'm sorry for your loss. The death of a child is something that remains with you, but I hope you find joy in the time you had together 😊

As a dad, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your daughter, and the other families. I can't imagine and appreciate your advocacy. You are right that infrastructure design is also a key component of safety.

It is my hope that they and the fans of Johnny & Matthew Gaudreau, take time for grief and in time work against drunk driving & towards safer roads & infrastructure, to help prevent the murder on our roads.

One blessing for me is that people have not forgotten about Robyn five years later. /END

More troubling was to learn that the US Department of Transportation actively suppressed the sideguard research by Quon Kwan. Such sideguards can help save the lives of bicyclists, pedestrians and drivers alike. The NHTSA created an advisory board to make recommendations. /23

Part of the reason my daughter was killed is commercial trucks (box trucks, semi-trailers, garbage & the like) are not required to have side underride guards. The EU & UK have had these guards for decades. The US trucking industry has been against them. /22

After Robyn was killed bicycling in New York City, SoHo on the Block interviewed Robyn's friend Rabbit. He detailed how the bicycle lane is often blocked in the morning, the force Robyn was impacted by the box truck driver and damage to their helmet. /21

At a very early age, I encouraged Robyn to be a safe bicyclist. This is something Robyn carried through their life. On the day Robyn was killed, they made a special trip to get their helmet. Bicycle helmets are not designed to withstand the impact of a box truck at 35 mph. /20

As a bicyclist, Robyn had the potential of being a professional cyclist and was of Olympic caliber. The week before Robyn was killed, they road from Richmond, VA to NYC, 350 miles in three days on a single gear track bike, with a courier bag full of belongings in just three days! /16

Often, after a bicyclist is killed, there is outrage, as has been the case in Philadelphia, when Dr. Barbara Friedes, a pediatric oncologist, was killed by Michael Vahey, who had twice the legal limit of alcohol and was speeding. Jersey barriers would have prevented this. /14

What has happened in Charlottesville has been to widen existing arterial highways. One section of Seminole Trail, if one includes turns, is 11 lanes wide. Seminole Trail has been the site of many road fatalities, including drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists and the disabled. /11

In the last three years, two bicyclists have been killed along the route I used to take. It is very frustrating that even with an increase in revenue and taxes, nothing has been done to make the roads safer. Adding a multipurpose path could have saved at least two lives. /10

I have lived in the Charlottesville, VA, area since 1979. Then, I had a bicycle loop from the city to Crozet to the west. In 1970, Crozet had a population of 1,433. In 2022, it was 8,894. In this time, there have been no improvements to the roads between Crozet and the city. /9

Many will put what happened solely on Sean Higgin's shoulders, but there were other factors. It was an infrastructure issue, too. I don't know how popular Pennsville Auburn Road is with bicyclists in New Jersey. What I can speak to is the roads I have bicycled on in the past. /8

"Accident" removes the responsibility of the diver. It becomes just some random unfortunate event. In the case of Sean Higgins, he decided to drink and drive behind the wheel of his jeep, to speed up, and pass two bicyclists on a two lane road. /7
