As a case in point, despite Lula's denunciation of the genocide in Gaza, the Brazilian Army and Federal Police still buy and employ Israeli technology in the Amazon and Rio's favelas, connecting the apartheid regime's unending violence against Palestinians to the Brazilian settler colonial project.

Meanwhile, the traditional "Left" represented by PT insists on the myth of development via a strong military. Lula, in particular, has never moved towards judging, penalizing, or reforming the Brazilian military, quite the opposite instead – the latter still holds a huge chunk of the federal budget.

The same murderous military men who killed, tortured, and kidnapped thousands of Brazilian activists, students, Black, and Indigenous claiming democracy, equality, and liberation during the 1960s and 1970s now enjoy their retirement without any resemblance of accountability. Impunity is the norm.
