Scrapped on "purely financial grounds"?
Meanjin just secured a $100k two-year grant.
Alongside sub income UniMelb's contribution was around $100k a year.
With grant that's $50k for nxt 2 yrs.
UniMelb made $250 million profit last year.
Tell me how killing a 85-yr old cultural journal is about $?

It’s ludicrous and insulting to suggest that the richest university in Australia can’t afford the two part-time wages to run Meanjin.
Also: did they even try to save it? Donation drive? Philanthropic efforts? Offering it to another institution?
No.
The university council shut it down intentionally.

Are we going to let this happen without a fight? #Meanjin will never make money. This is an arts project that, like all arts projects, needs patronage to survive. Why would #MUP expect it to make money? www.theguardian.com/books/2025/s...

Video of the international student at Tufts being arrested by "federal authorities" in Massachusetts has been released and it's terrifying.

They're not even uniformed officers. Just secret police thugs in hoodies and masks.

Very long thread. Worth it. 🦛
I have been doing entirely too much earnest posting about deep things recently, I need to do a proper thread about hippo testicles or something just to keep myself sane.

Oh by the way hippos have migratory testicles.

It was an honor to help the Union of Concerned Scientists with this! 🧪🌎

Sam Kerr charged with "the crime of trying to explain the concept of white privilege while drunk" www.crikey.com.au/2025/02/14/s... good stuff from Meg Clement and @crikey.com.au
'Stupid and white' is the least of it: Kerr's vindication and the dire failings of London's police
Kerr’s not guilty verdict is indictment of a police force that fails the communities it purports to protect. The case should have no bearing on her place in Australia's sporting landscape.

What Does It Mean That Donald Trump Is a Fascist?
Trump takes the tools of dictators and adapts them for the Internet. We should expect him to try to cling to power until death, and create a cult of January 6th martyrs.

So it’s nine years since I quit my job, with nothing to go to, days before Christmas.

I don't recommend that route to self-employment (but if you boss is an asshole, I kind of do). Anyway, it turned out alright in the end.

Here’s 15 lessons I've learned since striking out on my own.
