Bingo. If the game was interesting, Madden and Summerall were always laser focused on every single play. But if the game itself was no longer interesting, they found the best, funniest, most relatable stuff to talk about. They’d turn the broadcast into something Letterman/Carson-esque.
After the Super Bowl, I finally put my finger on what made Madden and Summerall so great, the ability to go off script. Eagles are up 37-0 and the crew is talking about Spags bottling up the run, because it's in their notes. Madden and Pat, they be talking about a lineman's belly or a turkey.
