Looks like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass was right to fire the fire chief. The LA Fire Department failed to notify the city's Department of Water and Power that more than 1,000 fire hydrants needed repairs. LAFD knew this problem months before the January 7 Palisades fire, and never told anyone.

According to city records and officials, the LAFD discovered the damage to the hydrants during inspections in the months prior to the Jan. 7 Palisades fire, which destroyed thousands of homes.

The Trump administration has canceled a program to plant trees in a low-income Black community in New Orleans because it violates Trump's anti-DEI order. Hurricane Katrina wiped out 200,000 trees in New Orleans, and a group called Sustaining Our Urban Landscape (SOUL) was planting hundreds of trees.

Civil rights leader Hazel Dukes, the former president of the NAACP, has died at 92. Born in racially segregated Alabama in 1932, Dukes moved to New York in 1955 and became a fixture in state politics, even administering the oath of office to Governor Kathy Hochul in 2023.
