November is a busy and stressful time for educators. I lost 12 pounds due to illness last month. Catching up with work and trying to gain strength to get back into better shape. #fitness

Excited to start another school year!

My school will be moving start time to 8:00 am this year. Will be a huge challenge for my gr. 11/12 class. Looking for suggestions on strategies to get students present, on time, and ready to learn in class. Don't want to use losing marks as leverage (my students' suggested when surveyed in June).

Wrote more here about why this mindset matters a lot to me—and also why it can be really hard with that expectation of "100% culture" rife across education right now

What I wrote yesterday. Blown save Hoffman. #BlueJays
Very surprised not to have seen Hoffman for so long. Yes, lots of blowouts and I assume he's fine, but I think the last time he got a long rest, the first game back he wasn't that sharp and lost the game.

Asian Studies scholars and teachers, do you know if there are any free online Intro to Asia textbooks for senior high (or first year university) out there? #AsianStudies

My students have successfully completed their AP Psychology exam today. Very grateful we made it through the new curriculum and the technology worked out for us today. Proud of the students and myself for all the effort we have put into the course this year. Going to enjoy my long weekend now!

To take a quote from Mark Carney, I think this would describe the Canucks' message to Elias Pettersson this summer: "Look inside yourself Petey." #canucks

Had a really good experience with this last week, so I wanted to detail each step of the lesson (spoiler: we spent nearly an hour doing "stuff" before students got their actual feedback!)

“Like many teachers, I sometimes notice my unease growing as I read a piece of student work. Word by word my suspicion builds, and then all at once I understand. This is an AI–generated text and not something my student actually wrote. Now what do I do?”

As an educator, when is using AI ethically permissible? I've tried to answer that question in the following blog post. #bced

I would say many educators today are very concerned with students using AI for their work. What about educators? AI has been a helpful tool and I have used it for things like building a rubric. However, is there a line where it is inappropriate for educators to use AI? 1/2

Next time a student responds to me with "I will take that as a No" then I should try to follow up with "No you'll take that as a very comprehensive answer to your question" I wonder what reaction I will get?

Went to The Bay today to use my remaining gift card amounts. As a Canadian history teacher especially, it is sad that the days of this historic Canadian company might be nearing its end. Department stores were such a staple of Canadian culture through the years but times indeed have changed.

This is something I've tried to navigate. My general policy is I allow one re-test per term (3 terms per year, grade 10 to 12 classes). If you re-do, 2nd mark will count regardless your score. Does this sound reasonable?
Trying to find the right balance with retakes? ⚖️

How Many Retakes Should Students Get?
Teachers can set fair boundaries on retakes to emphasize skill building without creating an unmanageable workload for themselves.

Teachers... what consequences, if any, do you give students to skip out, sleep in, or otherwise miss test day without a legitimate reason?
March 12, 2025 at 3:16 PM
Thank you for sharing this point. AI is here to stay, and students will find a way to use it even if we say they can't. We might as well take the initiative on this and guide students on using AI appropriately. This will be my professional growth for my next year.
Trying to keep AI out of the classroom is like stopping a tidal wave with a beach towel. Instead of banning AI tools like ChatGPT, let’s teach students how to use them responsibly.

At my school, we've launched an AI-themed book club, and AI discussions, along with tech spotlights, will be a regular feature on staff meeting agendas.

No matter your stance on AI in education, it’s crucial to foster staff discussions on the topic.

It is somewhat ironic that Justin Trudeau has become so much more likable since his announcement to step down as Prime Minister. I do think he has earned back a lot of respect with his words and actions in recent weeks.
