Here's the final post in my series on AI in education. This one explains the rationale behind my AI strategy. It's not perfect, but it's a start. #bced

Today, I made a Boy Meets World reference in my presentation. I'm not convinced anyone caught it 😞

What could AI literacy look like in the high school classroom?

If we want our students to use GenAI responsibly, then we must explicitly teach them to do so.

How to Teach AI Literacy in BC's K-12 Schools

Using Google's Notebook LM, I explored the intersection of the BC Ministry of Education's "Considerations for Using AI Tools in K-12 Schools," the OECD's AI Literacy Framework, and UNESCO's "AI Competency Framework for Students" to create this list of ten essential AI competencies for our students.

This year, I'll be launching my classes with this AI integration framework in place.

From day one, my goal is to establish open and productive dialogue about AI with my students.

Unlike many others, I'm feeling optimistic about the future of education.

Lately, I’ve been thinking a lot about "process over product" in my classroom, and how the core competencies tie into that idea.

Students can generate the product, but they can't generate the process.

That's my teaching motto next year.

This was a phenomenal watch about AI: its applications, its ethics, and its trajectory.
What's it like being a young creative in highschool in a world of AI?

Don't integrate AI just for the sake of integrating it.

Do so with the intent of teaching students about responsible and ethical use.

Do so with the intent of developing students' core competencies rather than undermining them. #bced

All AI implementation plans, especially those in #bced, should enhance students' development of the Core Competencies rather than impede.

If we want students to become educated citizens, we must create learning environments conducive to that.

I'm currently writing a blog post exploring how AI should be implemented in BC's K-12 education system to deepen rather than halt students' understanding of Core Competencies.

Any AI implementation should enrich rather than undermine our students' journey toward becoming educated citizens. #bced

I don't tell my students how to feel about AI technology. But I certainly tell them about it.

We chat about the ethics of it. How it could help society. How it could harm society. The whole spectrum.

I'm not sure what the answer is.

But not talking about AI is not a viable option. Not to me.

Can AI replace teachers?

Of course not.

However, with that question comes the responsibility to create a learning experience and environment that can not be replicated by machine.

I wonder to what extent generative AI is being leveraged by early career teachers?

How should I phrase this email to that parent?

How should I navigate that difficult conversation with this colleague?

How could I approach this behavior management problem more productively?
June 2, 2025 at 2:39 AM
This week, my Philosophy 12 students will apply their growing understanding of ethics to AI.

They get to choose an AI concern they feel passionate about and then construct an ethical framework that'll limit the potential harm associated with unregulated AI. #bced

Just because AI can do something isn't necessarily a good argument for not having students learn to do it, too.

The gulf between what AI can and can not do will narrow with time.

Misuse of AI, in my classroom, seems to be down compared to last year. I believe implementing this framework is at least partially responsible.

I'm weary of anyone presenting themselves as too certain in these tumultuous times in education. Who can possibly know all ends when it comes to AI and learning?
