My experience is that people do not refuse to engage in legitimate *conversation*, but they do refuse to engage with click-farming, trolls, and of course the many Nazis running around on social media these days.

People have learned the rhetoric of these asshats and no longer tolerate them.

A thread from the bad place from 12/15/22: John Scalzi shares an article from the Dayton Daily News with the headline “Moraine bank robbery suspect demands only a dollar” and the comment “He’s not good at this.” The article has a photo of a branch of the Fifth Third Bank. (Its logo is “5/3”.) @TheWallStreetBull responds: The most important part of this story is completely glossed over. That is, who the hell thought "Fifth Third Bank" was a good name, and where are Third banks 1-4? And I respond: The First through Third Third Banks were sabotaged during construction. The Fourth Third Bank disappeared 24 hours after it opened. The Fifth Third Bank was our last, best hope for free checking. (and I tag J. Michael Straczynski)

I’m always curious what people mean when they say “the left” in contexts like this. I usually assume they mean “the Democrats”, who are a center-right party with a small but vocal left wing.

The American left isn’t really in a position to frame anything as anything effectively.
