Most research universities would not be able to maintain their teaching missions without research. Graduate student appointments generate tuition waivers, which are paid from federal grant dollars. This money becomes part of the university's revenue stream.
I suspect that all selective universities could still break even just teaching and abandoning research. The federal money pays for research, which has expanded a lot. It would be a horrible tragedy if the money went away, and what it would mean is the end of scientific research and many hospitals.
This framing is nuts, and the assumption is that public funding for a public good is somehow untoward and illicit. “The schools took the money” and became “warily beholden to the whims of politicians in Washington.”/1

I called your DC office this week and got a canned voice message followed by a click. Enjoy your remaining time in office - after this your political career is over.
I will continue to fight against Donald Trump’s reckless, and in many instances, illegal attempts to gut the federal government. He is testing our system of checks and balances like they haven’t been tested in my lifetime. The fight continues.

as a postdoc whose university communicates absolutely zero percent of what's happening - Jeremy's work is greatly appreciated.
I literally just passed out sitting up on the couch last night after dinner after an exhausting day filled with rage and sadness.

After 5 hours of sleep, I woke up with two doggies using my legs as pillows, filled the righteous anger but mostly a sense of purpose.

I’m ready to face another day…

can't wait for the inevitable capitulation by university admin to the regime re: student/worker safety. with literally every part of science and the scientific enterprise under attack, they are likely to throw us under the bus in the name of preserving revenue
