It's definitely in worse before it gets better territory, but on immigration and military stuff the administration is either doing or about to do things that are really unpopular but also can't be reigned in by anyone but Trump, and even that is questionable.

If anything, if you're an at-risk Republican, having Trump back a primary challenger to you might actually help your chances since it gives you a chance to separate yourself from 2025-2026 Trump.

If I'm in a district that's already red-leaning-purple, do I really want the least popular president in US history campaigning for me, especially when there's a good chance he'll show up at the rally and do nothing but sway awkwardly to Andrew Lloyd Weber music?

You combine this with Trump's obvious mental and physical decline and if you're a Republican you've got to be asking yourself whether "Donald Trump will campaign for you in 2026" is a threat.

I also think they're getting to the point where they're looking at 2026 and are now more afraid of Trump coming out to campaign for them than they are of him backing a primary challenger.
