And one of the best parts of my job is getting to show what we do so the public can understand why science is important!
One of the best parts of my job at #UAlbany is telling the stories of our researchers!

We tagged along today w/ a prof. & grad student at @ualbanydaes.bsky.social who are collecting lake sediments (mud) in the Adirondacks that offer a climate history of the region stretching back centuries.

FYSA.

NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) is being forced to decommission several paleo databases (including data I used for my dissertation).

You will be able to request archived data via email, but I HIGHLY advise downloading what you need ASAP. 🧪🌊

So proud of how hard my PhD student worked on this! And importantly it shows that legislation can WORK.

Paleo folks: Does anyone know if NOAA/NCEI's Paleoclimatology database is part of NOAA's Amazon Web Services contract? Does the US paleo community need to start archiving datasets at Pangaea now too? FAIR data principles don't really work if the website can disappear with little notice.

My story on today's firings and their impact.

National Science Foundation fires roughly 10% of its workforce
NSF fired 168 employees, leaving the agency less equipped to fund a wide range of scientific research.

For every dollar of federal research funding in the United States, universities generate between $2.30 and $3.00 of economy activity, much of that in local communities.

That doesn’t even include the return on investment of getting a college or graduate degree, which research also dollars support.
