And to this day, poor CRM ("Crew Resource Management" or "the captain is not God") is cited as a factor in a ridiculous number of investigations, and many incidents have been much better than they could have been because of good CRM.
fwiw: we have already tried the "just let Manly Men fly the planes and everything will be fine" approach to aviation safety

and we discovered that said Manly Men would sooner run their airplane directly into the side of a mountain than admit they made a mistake

This isn't an exaggeration. Before Cockpit Resource Management became a thing, captains who acted like, and were deferentially treated like macho gods of the skies did things like let their planes run out of fuel or fly straight into the ground, and the other officers were too scared to stop them.

We pay more for power transmission than power generation most of the time. Regulation makes it take 10+ years to build new transmission lines and the Govt pays incentives to power companies for building them so there's basically a sanctioned monopoly over privatized infrastructure paid by the public
Individual car ownership as a solution to societal transportation needs.
