"Read diverse books" doesn't mean "have your spinach before you get to have candy." It means "look at all these colors of candy you could be having right now if you had more curiosity."
I have gotten the feeling that when we say "read diverse books," people hear, "you have to force yourself to read books you're not enjoying."
