L.A. is partnering with colleges and nonprofits to launch ShadeLA, an initiative focused on tree planting, canopy design and urban heat resilience before the 2028 Games.

Our latest USC Urban Trees Initiative study found that LA has stricter rules for where/what can go into the public right of way than nearly any other comparable cities. In many instances, these arcane rules are what is restricting tree planting in the places that need it most.

Super proud of our new USC Urban Trees Initiative study, but even more proud that Dr. Berelson scored the quote of the year - 'L.A. trees are kicking ass'.
It's no substitute for reducing our carbon consumption, but our new study finds trees in Los Angeles are surprisingly good at absorbing the carbon dioxide we spew into the air. @latimes.com reports:
‘L.A. trees are kicking ass.' Urban plants capture more CO2 than expected, study finds
A researcher tracking CO2 emissions across a swath of the city says trees are ‘uncanny’ air cleaners.

@tdiliberto.bsky.social is one of the most dedicated public servants I have ever met. His firing is not only a loss for NOAA, but for all Americans.
"I started working at NOAA as a contractor in 2010. I finally became a fed in 2023. I was 14 days away from my probationary period when I was fired on Thursday." - NOAA climate scientist Tom Di Liberto

👋 former negotiator here. US has a hard time engaging on text outcomes at CBD due to non-party status. The big impact here is actually the $$. US *was largest donor for global biodi - but most was just cut (USAID/GEF/TF CCA) with foreign aid freeze
NEW: The UN has confirmed to me that there are no US officials present at #COP16 in Rome

US is not signed up to the UN biodiversity convention, but usually attends to participate in negotiations

To my best of my knowledge, this is the first time the US has been missing at biodiversity talks

Our @usc.edu Urban Trees Initiative found that trees in #LA absorb up to 60% of GHGs during peak growing season - showing why #urbangreening matters.

As #wildfire recovery efforts continue in #LA, the damage isn’t limited to what we see—it’s what’s left behind in our soil. That’s why researchers from @usc.edu & Public Exchange joined forces to study potential lead contamination in fire-affected areas - supporting our communities in staying safe.

It's not just weather. Work with foreign nationals is a BIG part of what NOAA does - from climate negotiations (UNFCC, IPCC, Montreal Protocol), ocean (biodiversity conservation, fisheries, species protections), to space (satellites, space launches, etc.).
By definition, numerical weather models require international data. The atmosphere knows no geopolitical boundaries: any model that begins and ends at its country’s border is unable to generate reliable predictions until after a weather system crosses its boundaries. Which defeats the purpose!
NOAA Employees Told to Pause Work With ‘Foreign Nationals’
An internal email obtained by WIRED shows that NOAA workers received orders to pause “ALL INTERNATIONAL ENGAGEMENTS.”

New resource for folks impact by #PalisadesFires #EatonFire and #LAWildfires

A step-by-step checklist for homeowners who lost their properties. Info is confusing (do you apply to insurance or FEMA first?). Lets make it easier for our community to recover.

More guides to come.

As always, Costa gets it. We are still evacuating new areas and there is potential for more wind next week. There is a time to discuss rebuilding/system failures and it's AFTER people are safe.

Help us get info out now to keep people safe.
Burning fossil fuels causes climate change, which makes fires and other disasters worse. The folks in California need disaster relief now. The only "conditions" that should be on any kind of assistance is that we build communities that are resilient to climate impacts & have zero-emissions buildings

Live from LA: I cannot express how removed the online climate convo seems during these wildfires #palisadesfire #eatonfire

At evacuations sites, donations centers, etc. people don't care if climate caused the fire - they wanted to know where to go, what's going to happen, and if they are safe.

When looking at reducing risks from climate impacts, we often turn to hard engineered solutions. This report helps establish the evidence for using nature instead & opportunities to scale up.

Want people to care about climate change?

Our (@uscprice.bsky.social) new study found people are more likely to worry about climate change if they know someone who has been harmed by severe weather, even if they were not.

Climate comms advice: tell stories. make it personal.

Why wouldn't China want to be classified as a donor country? Well aside from all the obvious reasons, they would no longer be eligible for funds from the GEF and other MDBs.

They are actually taking climate finance away from those who need it most, but are never called out.

It's called delay. If KSA blocks progress this year, US (maybe Argentina and more) won't be there to push them next year.

As a reminder, there hadn't been an agreed to Climate Ministerial Statement (just Chair Summaries) from the G20 since Russia invaded Ukraine until this year. The final outcome did not reference the NCQG.

If you were hoping the G20 would help, you might want to look at a more useful fora.
