Britain and Europe’s greatest legacies are yet to come. They should lead the way in reversing harms from their slavery, empire, Industrial Revolution and the WWW that now haunt us as racism, post-colonialism, rampant capitalism, environmental and societal collapse.

Media coverage of the Gaza ceasefire has erased Israel’s crimes with no calls for accountability. Instead, there is heroic praise for the perpetrators in a deal that could have happened two years ago. My contempt for the media that enabled this is as deep as their moral and professional debasement.

Palestine is not only a land and Palestinians are not merely a people. Combined, they are part of all our foundational histories and cultures. Their suppression plays out on all these fronts as does their disastrous replacement with racism and the law of the jungle.

The far right and centre have largely converged. They stoke anxiety about immigrants “stealing jobs” or “eroding culture,” all while paving the way for AI to displace workers and destabilise society - even democracy itself. In such an atmosphere, the space for rational debate has all but vanished.

Democracy cannot survive without rule of law—laws that defend human rights & hold power to account. It is neither majority tyranny nor elite capture. The upcoming RITE report on Gaza-related cases since Oct 7 shows these foundations crumbling in the UK, Europe & US.

Israel has long claimed to the US and West it is their only ally in the strategic ME, though this was never true. By striking Qatar it seeks to make it so, pushing Arabs toward a “protector” from US tyranny. Israel needs permanent war to stay relevant to the allies that fund its belligerence.

Israel’s strike on Doha is a message to all Gulf and Arab leaders from the US: comply with whatever we want or die. What they do not take by force they will take over anyway through resources and investment grabs. The same message goes out to the rest of the world.

This is the 5th country Israel has bombed only today following from Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, Tunisia.
Here’s what just happened: Trump sent a peace deal to Hamas, Hamas met to discuss it in Doha, where the U.S. is mediating talks and has a base, and Israel bombed them, presumably with US support.
September 9, 2025 at 1:54 PM
The Israeli-US template does not recognise any nation as sovereign and any due process or rule of law as important. They have mutually reinforcing policies of bombing whoever they want whenever they want and trampling on any rights they find inconvenient.

"The BBC should hang their heads in shame" for not airing the 'Gaza: Doctors Under Attack' film, said Gary Lineker at a screening in London tonight.

Luckily, Zeteo bought the global rights to this hugely important documentary and is airing it here:

The limits on the court remit are also the limits on our ability to hold the executive accountable in our democracies. Voting in parliament is dominated by party whips rather than public interest, and protests have not led the government to reconsider, but to crackdown instead on citizen rights.

The repercussions are felt by citizens everywhere public opinion clashes with state support for Israeli war crimes, occupation, and apartheid. Instead of changing course, governments crack down on dissent in undemocratic ways while their motives remain opaque and at odds with human rights.

I oppose the authoritarian Iranian regime but consider it a lesser evil to Israel’s occupation and ethnic cleansing of Palestine. Given Arab normalisation and Western complicity in this, Iran is scandalously the only remaining check on Israel’s impunity, and has the right to defend itself.

Starmer/Labour are hoping to get Reform supporters to vote Labour by imitiating the right. Here is a serious major political science study on the effectiveness of this tactic.

Can "center" parties win by taking on right-wing positions?

Hint: it doesn't work.
