This wintry scene was captured from southern Poland on the northern hemisphere's long solstice night. Otherwise unseen nebulae hang in the sky, revealed by the camera modified to record red hydrogen-alpha light. The nebulae lie near the edge of the Orion molecular cloud and join the Hunter's familiar belt stars and bright giants Betelgeuse and Rigel. Eye of Taurus the Bull, yellowish Aldebaran anchors the V-shaped Hyades star cluster near top center. Still, near opposition in planet Earth's sky, the Solar System's ruling gas giant Jupiter is the brightest celestial beacon above this horizon's snowy peaks.

Astronomers have used Hubble to peer closer than ever into an energetic monster black hole powering a quasar. The new image details a lot of weird things: filaments, lobes, and a mysterious L-shaped structure: bit.ly/4fIkNTC 🔭 🧪

There is a linear orange-white smoke-like feature stretching to the 4 o’clock position, an extragalactic jet launched from the quasar in the center of a black hole of an unseen galaxy. The panel below is roughly the same image but in blue shades. A black circle blocks the glare of the quasar in this image, disrupting the headlight effect. Blue-colored filamentary material can be seen near the black hole. The extragalactic jet is still visible.
