Surprising no one who has been following this issue, the deeply flawed and misguided Online News Act continues to be disastrous for small news orgs in Canada. ⚖️
As a Canadian lawyer, the American grand jury system has always been perplexing to me. It seems like a colossal waste of resources that only serves to give a veneer of legitimacy to what is actually just an exercise of prosecutorial discretion. ⚖️

The Online News Act is a fundamentally flawed law that provoked an entirely predictable response from the platforms and ultimately serves only to undermine journalism and public safety. This recent CJR article gives a good summary. ⚖️

⚖️ A few weeks ago, someone on Bluesky was surprised to learn that artists can remove their works from the blanket licenses granted by ASCAP/BMI. The attached letter shows how it was just done by Eminem to prevent Vivek Ramaswamy from using and/or performing Eminem songs on the campaign trail.
