(3/4) An outdoor classroom was created at Walter Maginnis, featuring pollinator and native plants, sensory and Zen gardens, a solar-powered water feature, and compost bins to regenerate depleted soils.

There’s a buzz around MCF-Red Wing, thanks to the bees and impactful environmental news. The facility’s Walter Maginnis High School earned Green Flag Certification from the National Wildlife Federation – becoming the first and only juvenile justice school in the U.S. to receive the honor. (1/4)

The MN DOC has implemented an electronic visiting application system at all adult facilities. The new system replaces one in which visitors were required to submit their applications using the U.S. postal service. Learn more about the new system: mn.gov/doc/about/ne...

(2/3) “Metamorphosis” was the theme of the event. DOC Director of Secondary Education Shauna Bock noted that educational experiences – like how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly – are transformational. Bock congratulated graduates for their perseverance and hard work.

Joyful cheers spread throughout the audience at MCF-Lino Lakes during a recent celebration of academic achievements. High school diplomas and GEDs were granted to 45 students and another 19 individuals earned Cable Network Technician certificates. (1/3)

(2/2) Some students expressed pride in both their literary accomplishments and with their own courage to be able to read in front of an audience. Students remarked that they never considered themselves writers before, and for most students, it was their first time engaging in creative writing.

MCF-St Cloud recently hosted its first poetry and fiction reading event for students involved with the Minnesota Prison Writers Workshop. Eleven students read their own works, ranging from poems to short prose pieces, to a packed auditorium Tuesday, July 15. (1/2)

The MCF-Moose Lake American Legion Post and veterans group recently hosted a ruck march that raised $650 for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) of Minnesota. Lauri Brooke, the Executive Director of DAV of MN marched with nearly 80 incarcerated individuals and 10 staff.

An internationally acclaimed musician recently performed at MCF-Stillwater. The concert was sponsored by the Canadian nonprofit organization Looking at the Stars, which seeks to bring classical music to people who expect it the least and need it the most. (1/2)
