1. US adopts wildly destructive tariff policy
2. Retaliation will be v.painful
3. White House is more chaotic than even pessimists feared
4. Jobs numbers confirm that at least we've arrived at this point with a healthy economy

It's a good jobs report, and a big relief: The economy is going to hit Tariff-mageddon with a lotta momentum.

Payrolls +228k, well above expectations, and consistent with a remarkably robust and mature economic expansion.

Unemployment up a tick to 4.2%, but still LOW.

What is notable is
a. The astonishing insanity of the motivation and ‘analysis’ behind these tariffs, and
b. The utter stupidity of their implementation.

This is bad.

The US is going from having one of the better public data infrastructures to one of the worst in <3 months.

Education, climate, and health data have already taken a massive hit, and with them research in these fields.

Now Musk/Trump/GOP are coming after economic and population data.
NEW: The Commerce Department is giving federal employees at the Census Bureau and most other parts of the department until April 17 to apply for a voluntary early retirement authority or voluntary separation incentive payments offer if they're offboarded by May 3, according to emails shared with NPR

Tom Friedman on point here, though he understated the case. Either Trump is the worse negotiator in all the universes of truth and fiction, or he is beginning an alliance with Russia with a joint attempt to subjugate Ukraine (and then much else).
