the 2 in the front comes from number of layers (minus 1 in case of even n) and 26/36 comes from renumbering the points from outside in to inside out

oh and with even n you need to treat the middle point separately

n=5: 2 - floor(sqrt((26-x)/3))
n=6: 2 - floor(g((36-x-1)/3)) where g(x) is (-1+sqrt(1+4x))/2 (an inverse of f(x) = x(x+1))

if you number it from the inside, it turns out better (without all the subtraction) and generalises to odd and even n respectively

and it actually feels less punishing to get hit - because i think, oh, well, i was gonna heal anyways so i might as well just do it now. and it makes it seem like less of a waste of silk to me.

i have to say, i actually really like the healing system as contrasted against hollow knight. in hollow knight i would try to stay at full health constantly, retreating every time i took damage, finding enemies to farm heals off which just made the gameplay slow and frustrating.
