It is impossible to prevent someone from talking about you in any venue they like if you say things in public. 🤷‍♂️ This mindset reminds me of the absurd concept of "Brigading" on Reddit, where they try to prevent people from talking about Reddit posts elsewhere on Reddit.
we don’t tolerate letting literally anyone talk to us about anything off the internet

why should the internet be different

It really amounts to a button that admits one's position is baseless and one has no rational counter argument.
>95% of time I mute annoying people and forget they exist but it's nice having a button you can press that says go fuck yourself

Is it even possible to "block" people from responding to public speech? https://hyp.is/_gjI-OOlEe2t_ctaAcmo3w/staging.bsky.app/profile/maz.bsky.social/post/3ju4vf6tngm2g Makes the whole thing moot, honestly.
blocking is necessary because it:
* creates mild barriers to seeing you and qting you which have to be deliberately circumvented
* communicates to the person you don't want them to interact with you
* prevents them from rting or (most important by far) putting shit in your replies
Blocking is silly. It prevents people from hearing your POV, which should be awesome enough that everyone should benefit from it. Muting/ignoring is all you really need. It's sad how many journalists have blocked me on Twitter because I called them out on blatant lies. Self-censoring is nonsense.

it is important that people behave until you can block accounts and honestly if bsky takes off we will still probably have a years of a more collegial and friendly atmosphere than twitter until social trust falters but I want us to be the polis not a province

The coolest secret little club I've found is D-STAR. It was built in Japan the 90's, requires a hardware key and a vetting process for basic technical competence, and still works today. Best of all, it still works (at least regionally) if the entire Internet is down. You can even send memes!
it'll be nice if the people who want their isolated microcommunities can have them via algo tricks, but don't forget the point of this place is not to be a secret little club, the point is to replace twitter

I miss the Microsoft SPOT (Smart Personal Objects Technology) watches. They don't work, because they relied on a regional data stream broadcast from FM antennas in major markets around the world. The cool thing was that any device could have a receiver for local weather, news, stocks, and alerts!
It still works. Over 10 years old, company defunct, and it still works.

In work settings I learn to be more productive. In personal time, I try to use what someone paid me to learn to be more productive at the things I care about. I guess I'm lucky that I don't have to change what I do based on who I'm with. 🤔
to be clear: I LOVE WHAT I DO and actually enjoy talking about it in work settings.
